On May 31,1964, (Game 1 | Game 2) San Francisco played in New York during a double header and the two teams set the Major League record for most innings played in one day with thirty-two.
This must have destroyed both team’s pitching staffs that day and for a few days afterward. Were any players not on the pitching staffs asked to get on the mound that day or in the days following? How do managers and pitching coaches usually handle this kind of situation?
Here’s the box for the 23 inning game. Only six pitchers were used by each team. I’d say only four of them threw enough innings to affect their availability. (Perry threw 10 shutout innings in relief, and the losing Mets pitcher threw 9.)
In the nine inning game, Marichal threw a complete game and only three pitchers were used by the Mets.
No position players pitched; you see that more in blowouts.
Pitchers used to throw a lot more innings than they do now.
