A very good movie, but a warning: the scenes inside the cave were done with a very low-resolution camera (necessary due to restrictions placed upon visitors to the cave… reminded me of Bradbury’s “A Sound of Thunder”). The 3D is still amazing, and the switch between hi-res outside/low-res inside actually enhances the feeling of entering the past. Quite worthwhile, and this one film IMO justifies 3D movies. I always laugh when movie reviewers say 3D needs to be killed off, yet give this one high marks when its effectiveness is precisely because of the 3D.
I have always liked 3D technologies, so I’ve picked up a lot of the 3D Blu Rays out there. In general, the CG animated films have good-to-excellent 3D, so they’re not listed below.
Best of my collection: Tron: Legacy, Cave of Forgotten Dreams, Coraline, Kylie Minogue: Aphrodite les Folies (really surprising how effective 3D can be for a live concert), the IMAX documentaries, Resident Evil: Extinction. Tron is the showcase film for my set-up.
Middling: Captain America, Thor, Green Lantern, Step Up 3D, the softcore stuff from German distributor Intimate Film (actual content is poor, but the 3D is quite decent), Piranha 3D, Nightmare before Christmas. All good, but not eye-popping. Considering some of these weren’t filmed in native 3D, it’s actually kind of amazing that it’s pulled off as well as it is.
Low: Green Hornet, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2011 (the 3D is perfectly fine, but the obvious appeal of 3D in this title isn’t exploited), Conan, Clash of the Titans, Drive Angry (which is okay, and was filmed in native 3D, but it’s just not used to good effect).
