Has anyone played around with this? I updated my nVidia drivers and saw it had a set-up option for 3D games. I’m not willing to invest in fancy equipment but one of the options is for anaglyphic 3D and a pair of plastic frame/lens glasses is all of $1.95 on eBay.
nVidia has a list of titles with rankings of how suitable they are with some stuff like Arkham City and LA Noire being “3D ready” (their highest rating) but I don’t know how well that translates to anaglyphic 3D versus other techniques like the powered stereoscopic glasses.
Cool? Gimmick? Not worth it without special equipment? I’m throwing down for the glasses just for novelty’s sake (plus there’s rare occasions where I wanted some) but it’s a shipped from China special with an arrival date of Feb 5th.
Edit: I see that there’s differences in lens quality that affects image ghosting. My sole experience with red/blue glasses are the cheap paper ones.
Anaglyph is not really worthwhile, in my opinion - the colour loss is lame, and you will notice ghosting unless you have exactly the right filters and monitor adjustments.
Playing with shutter glasses is pretty sweet - but the price point is still a bit above that of this long time certified 3D geek. My current monitor is very nice and only four years old, I can’t justify replacing it just for 3D - but bet your ass the next one will be 3D capable.
It looks pretty cool. I’ve seen it at friend’s homes, and at retailer demo’s. It’s definitely a plus in the immersion factor.
But yeah, I’m too fond of my 2560x1440 IPS monitor to replace it with a 1080p TN 3D one.
And the cost and space of one extra monitor just for 3D plus the glasses kit ($200 IIRC), is too much right now. Maybe when I get a house.
Another thing you have to remember is that running games in 3D is the same as running the game at a very high resolution. The video card has to render both frames, so there will be a performance hit.
You will need a beefy GPU in roder to do 3D at high resolutions and at high graphics settings.
I gave my impressions of the shutter glasses 3d here a few years ago. I don’t think I’ve used it since then, at least not for gaming I’ve watched a couple movies on it. Though if you could use the 3d effect on a monitor that wasn’t Window’s “Primary” monitor I’d probably use it at least every once in a while. The effect is nifty and I’d use it just for varieties sake if changing the primary monitor and rearranging my desk so that the keyboard/mouse is positioned comfortably for the 3d monitor is just too damned inconvenient.
Well there’s the Toshiba 55ZL2 which will supposedly ship in Germany by the end of the year and worldwide by 2015. Supposedly they’ve fixed a lot of the ghosting problems and similar.
