I still don’t think you get it, Tripler. The whole list is pro-gun. Try reading it again in that light.
And the original writer had the same intent as the OP - to make gun control advocates look hypocritical and wrong-headed.
Just to shatter a misconception: It’s not really the norm in America, either. What is it, something like 80 million gun owners?
Nope, Tripler still doesn’t get it.
It’s somewhat like a parody - you won’t ‘get’ it if you’re not very familiar with the original ideas it’s parodying.
This is a very old piece, but I’ve always seen it presented as something to entertain pro-gun folks rather as something to convince anyone.
Apologies Spoofe, but the impression I get from much that comes out of the US is that most citizens, even if they do not own a firearm, are supportive of the inalienable right to own one.
That view seems to be only held by a minority here in Australia.
(I am finding it difficult to get hold of reliable (non-partisan) stats about gun ownership/rates of firearm useage in crime etc both for Aus and the US. Anybody got any clues where I could access them…I’ve tried the ABS and the Australian Bureau of Criminology but to no real avail. Please do not suggest the NRA or the Sporting Shooters Association or Gun Control Australia!!)
Yeah, that’s all fine and dandy when someone tells you it’s a tongue-in-cheek list. However there’s nothing in the OP to suggest that it’s even remotely so.
The only way to realize this (which is where I failed) is to read a few lines down and see that it was posted in jest. Too damn many times have I heard comments similar to these from friends or family members who are anti-gun, and I just smile and nod my head. Doesn’t mean I agree with 'em, just that I’ve heard their voice.
It may be a very old piece, but it’s the first time I’ve seen it. It’s kinda hard to detect sarcasm over a message board when you can’t detect the intonation in someone’s “posting” voice. . .

unclviny, go to the ATMB (About This Message Board) forum and read all the sticky threads, particularly FAQ - guidelines for posting at the SDMB and New and improved registration agreement. You should also read the forum descriptions more carefully. The BBQ Pit is NOT the place for Great Debates. Nor is it a place to troll. Do not troll in ANY forum of the SDMB.
