all other factors being equal, which cpu would be faster:
AMD K6-3 333 overclocked to 400
or
AMD K6-2 450 overclocked to 500
Just a WAG here since I haven’t seen benchmarks for this but in general a newer generation chip is faster than an older generation chip for more reason than just clock speed.
The newer model chip has architecture enhancements that make it faster and more efficient as well as new fiddly bits (such as 3D-NOW! extensions) to help things along.
On the whole my guess would be you’d see better overall performance from the K6-3 chip. Keep in mind that overclocking can intriduce variables that would change this…if the K6-2 has its bus speed jacked higher than the K6-3 you may see better performance from the K6-2 but you did stipulate in the OP “other factors being equal”.
I could be way off here, but I seem to recall that, for the same clock speed, the K6-2 was faster than the K6-3 for some applications but lacked an instruction set. Hopefully someone can set us (me) right on this…

I had to look it up, but they did make one. Amazing.
I’m going to go against the grain and bet on the k6-2. The “2’s” were much better and more stable overclockers than the “3’s” turned out to be. The “3’s” are great processors, but don’t play 3d games on them, they fall down there.
Yes they both run stabilly at the overclocked speed. THe 3 will go up to 450 but I think that’s asking too much. The bus speed will be the same (100x5 vs 100x4).
Since I am upgrading my computer I will have the k6-2 available to use in my wife’s computer (currently the k6-3). She doesn’t play games but sometimes will use it for some less intensive network games.
this got me thinking - could this be said of almost all chips, especially chips 1 generation apart (assuming same clock speed). i.e. is there an application out there which would run faster on a 486DX2-66 then on a P66? I know your point is that in this case it must be more then a rare few apps - just a hijack but it’s my thread anyway.
