40W range hood bulb substitutions...

I have a kitchen range hood that takes one 40-watt appliance bulb. It is not nearly bright enough, but the fixture takes maximum 40 watts. I was wondering if there is an LED bulb that would replace this? I’m not sure if this would work, because LEDs are directional. In this fixture, the bulb screws in sideways and I want the light to be cast down onto the stove.

Has anyone had to deal with this? Is there an LED or some other replacement that would give more light but not exceed 40 watts?

You could use a CFL. A 13-W compact fluorescent puts out about as much light as a 60-W incandescent.

Are they the same physical size as a round 40-W appliance bulb?

I have seen smaller form factor CFLs.

Roughly, yes, although the standard 13-W CFL is slightly more bulky than a typical incandescent bulb. There’s also a “Micro Mini” version made by Sylvania which fits even more fixtures than its larger cousins.

This Neolite looks like a good bulb.
