50 years ago today, the music died.

Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper (J. P. Richardson), along with their pilot, Roger Peterson, died in a plane crash fifty years ago today.

Shall we sing a dirge in the dark?

Do you remember what was revealed?

Isn’t it 51?

Yeah, it was 1959.

I was 14 and in band class when we heard about it, the first music death for my generation, I think. Part of the shock was that we thought famous people had some special protection. “What? He can’t die – he’s famous!” And we felt bad that it happened so close to home.

I’m stuck in 2009. It’s been February 2nd for a year until today. Sorry.

But not the last.

We’ve already got a thread for that.

“Rock n’ roll’s been goin’ downhill since Buddy Holly died.”

Let’s all drive our Chevys to the levee to drink whiskey and rye.

Ironically, that was before the music I listen to was born. But it rested on the shoulders of giants.

Trivia: The Beechcraft’s registration (N-number) is now assigned to a 1967 (year manufactured) Mooney M20F.

That day I was a girl who sang the blues.
