53 bicycles: A lateral thinking puzzle

So, was Colby a pet (cat, dog, or bird) that somehow graduated from Trinity Southern University with an MBA? How does that happen?

Yes.

You pretty much got it, Telemark. Good job!

Info Here.

Colby has company.

I assumed Trinity Southern University was a real school, not a diploma mill. OK, that makes a bit more sense.

**According to accounts at the time, rabbit stew virtually disappeared from supper tables in England during the late fall of 1726. Before this period rabbit was a popular dish. It took some time for the rabbit meat market to rebound.

Why did this happen?**

Does it have anything to do with people dying of malnutrition due to eating only rabbit?

I have heard if you live on rabbit, you die since they do not provide a certain needed…something.

**No **

Is the problem connected to something bad for health in the rabbit stew?

Was there a scam involved?

Is the problem connected to something bad for health in the rabbit stew?

**No **

Was there a scam involved?

**Yes **

Does the answer involve the availability of rabbit meat?

No.

Was the change related to religious beliefs or practices?

No.

Anything to do with that hoax in which a woman claimed to have given birth to massive numbers of rabbits?

**Yes **!!!

Well done. I thought certainly this would take longer to solve. The Mary Toft hoax fascinated the British public and as a result turned the public off of eating rabbit meat. Another story here.

I’ve just read way, way too many books about hoaxes. As soon as you said there was a scam involved, I remembered that one, and figured that the timeline was about right.

Reading about scams (the infamous Nigerian 419 emails) was what first brought me to the Dope.

Yes. But because this hoax was so obviously absurd it is quite amazing to me that many of those who were deceived fell for it so deeply. And the effect from the press and deception in Britain that November some 291 years ago might easily lead to laughter or tears still.

O.K., another silly one from my life.

Why do I have a rule that I can’t wear sneakers when I go out for ice cream?

Does the answer involve the region in which you live?

No.
