I was wondering if anyone here knew what would be the best web accelerator for 56k… specifically to improve file transfers…
Preferably freeware, or possibly shareware, if need be…

there are a few things you can do. I suggest searching cnet, they did an artical on it (several actually). But lets face it you are still dealing with a max of 53k out of 56k (but some isp’s will allow you to use 2 lines at the same (for a price) time giving you a max of 106k out of 112k close to isdn.)

The suggestions I’ve heard are download the latest drivers, get rid of bandwidth robbing apps (icq, weather, etc.), and try a download accelerator. One that I’ve tryed worked pretty well till they went to adware to support the free version they I trashed it. Basically it fetched all the links on a web page while you were reading it, if you clicked on a link it would be already downloaded and come up instantly. Also it would prefetch pages you visit frequently but sometimes you had to hit refresh as the prefetched page was slightly out of date.

If you are just intrested in lowering your ping - read look for the cnet artical something like ‘how to become a low ping bastard’ (if you don’t know that is a internet gamming refrence).

      • I have tried the freebie (ad) version of Download Accellerator Plus. It’s a browser plug-in that doesn’t automatically download anything, you have to start it as normal. It doesn’t really speed anything up, but when a connection is lost it does automatically try to reconnect and resume on its own, which is nice. I was recommended to use it by a web page for device drivers that practically required it - without it I lost the download connection every 30-50K of a 2 meg download. DAP got it all on its own on the first try.
  • I’d suspect that DAP probably monitors your downloads, if you care. I wouldn’t pay for the non-advertisement version; I get about 4.5K/sec over a 56K line with DAP or without it, no matter if it uses one line or four.
  • It also doesn’t work for MS Windows updates, but they usually support resume on retry anyway. - MC
