Anyone ever see or compete in one of these (are they even a thing?)?
My gf saw mention of a 5k race/obstacle course for people and dogs being held today. She signed up and is in a noon heat. Neither one of us ever heard of such a thing, but Kizzy is doing great in Agility 2 and gf has always trained at 5k in hopes of doing a marathon relay (COVID caused cancellation of last one).
She has some pre-race jitters, so I’m looking for any advice/experience.
Well, it was a fun event. Hundreds of dogs and their owners, various dog related businesses, a beer garden, etc. The location was a ski resort so the race went up and down various slopes.
The event was just for fun, so the rules were flexible and there were no categories for different ages. My gf ran her heart out and Kizzy did every obstacle. Many people just ran around the obstacles.
Team Kizzy came in third. I watched them run the final hundred yards to the finish line and they barely missed second place to a guy half her age.
Looks like we’ll do this again if the opportunity arises.
Were the teams officially named according to their canine component, or is that just you hiding your girlfriend’s name? Because if the former, that’s adorable.
Was that the event over in Boyce Park? I wanted to take my dog Crocodile to it but I didn’t think I could handle him around that much excitement. He’s a Blue Heeler, so he’d probably have spent the day trying to herd everyone.
Yep, Boyce Park ski slopes. Kizzy was totally laid back, but I brought Simi along and he was overwhelmed.
Team Kizzy was my invention. She was such a good dog!
I was impressed by the variety of dogs. Some were happy go lucky, like Kizzy. There were also dogs wearing various types of muzzles, dogs tugging their owners around, dogs that never stopped barking, etc.
It was like Kennywood, but dogs instead of kids.
Sounds like a blast. Were there separate obstacles for dogs and people? Were the dog obstacles typical agility course things like tunnels, hurdles, and teeter totters?
The obstacles included a tunnel (Kizzy loves tunnel, most dogs wouldn’t do it), weave polls, tires laying on the ground that dogs and owners had to run through, hay bales to jump over, bubbles (a bubble machine made a wall of bubbles), a large baby pool, a rope to crawl under, a stairway (platforms at gradually increasing heights), plus others that I didn’t see.
The funny part to me was my 63 y.o. gf finishing third and the 30 year old who barely took second chatting after the race. He was huffing/puffing while she was back to her resting respiratory rate.
Oh, I have to go to that next time! I have a basket muzzle for Croc and he’d love to run around all day with other dogs. Me? At 53 I’d be the one huffing and puffing while being dragged through the course.
