Last week a fellow student asked me if I’d started my thesis paper! Ho ho ho!
I did most of the research already. I just need to type it up.
I’ve typed every paper for this class the night before it was due, mostly because of time constraints. I guess it just wouldn’t be right to start this one early.
Wait! First you really gotta check out the action over in great debates. Then check out the questions. And then ya gotta hit MPSIMS again. And then …
Shall we have a pool for the number of posts A girl makes today while avoiding her paper? I say 12.
I seem to recall a time I could do 20 pages overnight. And every word a pearl. Moreover, we had to use whiteout and eraseable bond. None of them fancy word processors you wimps have today. (Oh yeah, 3 miles thru snow to and from school, uphill boths ways.)
Remeber, there are no deadlines, only suggestions. And anyone expecting an assignment on Saturday deserves to get it late!
Hey, good idea! GD is where I got my idea for this, I’m doing it on the “gay gene.”
Well, here’s avoidance post #1…
20 pages! That’s quite a feat! I know all the pros are saying “big deal, 8 pages,” but for me, an amateur, it’s quite an undertaking!
Ugh! This whole English class has been every Sat morning from 9-1… There are about 8 people left of the 30 that started. It has been a bit of a struggle.
Tomorrow is the LAST CLASS! Yeah!
Hmmmmm… every time I get started highlighting my research notes or putting ideas together, someone comes into my office and bothers me! I think it’s a sign, I better put this off until this afternoon…
A girl
One semester end in grad school I produced over 60 pages of writing in a 36 hour period. Four different papers and got at least a B on all of them.
When I was an undergrad I had a tradition for papers. My job at the time was at the library and I worked until midnight. At 12:00am the day the paper was due I would head to the local IHOP for a hearty meal. Then off to the 24-hour computer lab (which I am told UW has since closed) where I would work until the paper was done. Take a short nap on the couch at the lab and then head to class and turn it in.
One thing I noticed. When i was a freshman it took about 8 hours to produce an eight page paper. By the time I got my BA I could produce about 20 pages in that time. By the time I was done with my masters a 5 page paper was something I produced in the hour before class.
One of the bad thing college will teach you is how to say something using the most words possible. One of the good things is it will create such a visceral sense of flow that you really can produce longer items without thinking so much.
White Out? Wild birds? We had to start all over again with a new rock and a clean chisel! And hammers hadn’t been invented yet so we had to use our foreheads. Did you ever get all the way to the end and found out you’d left a hieroglyphic out on the very first rock? I remember how relieved we all were when cave paintings first came out.
That’s 2 (and I haven’t even searched anywhere else). I have the feeling 12 will be a tad low.
Place your bets. Winner gets to choose next week’s body part (as long as it is the bit A girl was planning to share with us.)
Here is some real advice–not bragging about how fast I can write like the above posters.
Do not use a cover page. Put your name, date, and the title on the first page. That buys you 1/4 of a page.
Use 1.5 inch margins on the right and left and bottom and 1 inch on the top. That is the biggest you can use without looking like you are using big margins.
If you have footnotes, place them at the bottom of the page rather than at the end of the paper.
Double space it. You’re probably supposed to double-space anyway.
If you are on a Mac, use the font “New York.” On either a Mac or a PC you can use “Courier.” Those are two large fonts that don’t scream “I used a large font!” Use 12-point type–any bigger is noticeable.
And some general advice: Make sure you have a title and page numbers. Professors like that.
