'70s rockers in their childhood homes

Theseare some excellent photos. Dig Frank Zappa’s folks’ house!

Aw…Donovan looks just like his mum!:stuck_out_tongue:

He also looks like Roger Daltrey.

Eric Clapton looks nothing like he does now.

Richie Havens’ parents have a little memorial to Bobby, Martin and John. Nice!

Wow. What a blast from the past.
Gah… I feel old now.

I’m imagining if these photos were being published today - the furious uproar about how Grace Slick is so “carelessly dangling her child.” Every entertainment “news” show would have a parenting expert excoriating her for that.

weird to see that Zappa’s parents are hanging to painting from the first Alice Cooper album on their wall. Niiiice!

My God, these photos are unbelievable! Thanks for posting this. My favorite has got to be Richie Havens. These were, of course, taken with medium format cameras. Some mention has to be made of the photographer here, John Olson, a major LIFE stud. Like many of the best photojournalists, he got his start in the military. He shot extensively in Vietnam during the war for Stars and Stripes, and eventually became LIFE’s youngest staff photographer. An interview here.

A couple of other online slideshows (here and here) identify it as Frank’s house, not his parents’ (which certainly seems more likey)

Heh…he really does, doesn’t he?

Dude also did not photograph well…here and his album covers, he always looks so scared…like he’s afraid the camera’s going to steal his soul!

If I remember correctly, when LIFE Magazine first ran the picture story they correctly identified the location as Frank’s home. (I saved that issue for years, but no longer have it.)

Come to think of it, shouldn’t the thread title be “70’s rockers with their parents”? Seems to me that was the title of the original LIFE piece.
