7mm Mauser (winchester model 70)

A few of weeks ago I asked about AR-15s and alluded to the fact I have a 270.

Well I was mistaken. I was told I was to be given a 270, but it turns out that it is a winchester 70 (7 X57…or 7 mm Mauser). It is a bolt action rifle, probably manufactured in the 1980s. It has an awesome Leopold scope.

Does anyone have an opinon about this particular rifle and perhaps what kind of ammo I should consider. I’ll realistically just use it on a gun range, but I suppose, I should get used to some hunting rounds too.

I have never shot either a 270 win or a 7mm Mauser, but the late Jack O’Conner was a fan of both, and I am a fan of JO’C, so I think you have a nice rifle there. Do you know if it is pre or post 1964? (?? I think it’s '64 that matters ??) The pre-'64 model 70s are highly coveted, and command premium prices. If it is pre-64 and you’d prefer a different caliber, you could probably sell it for enough to pay for any current production rifle you’d like.

Here is a thread on gun/hunting board that compares/contrasts the two calibers, and some talk about ammo choices.

I’m absolutely sure it is post-64

So it’s not the highly sought after versions

7mm Mauser is a great old round. It caused both the US and the UK to re-evaluate their military rounds after facing enemies armed with the 7mm. It was a very popular hunting round here in the US a few decades back when surplus rifles using it were plentiful and cheap. Keep the gun, there’s not a thing wrong with the 7mm.

I have one, and it is a great hunting rifle…keep it
