When an American says ‘Are you serious’, it usually means ‘The position or opinion you have just stated is so completely out-of-line with common sense and logical analysis as to be fodder for a joke’.

Much the same benefit that one gets out of flag burning or shouting “hell no, we won’t go” with 50,000 others at the top of their lungs. The status quo is unchanged, and all of those examples are protected. Yet they have inflamed the sensibilities of a group of people. Why else would they do it but for the fact that they know with absolute certainty that they’re going to piss someone off?
We have a long history of protecting speech like this. In fact, the Supreme Court recently affirmed the right of people to act like this. We either accept that fact or we work to change it. I don’t know that I want to see a hole in that wall, so I’m resigned to the fact that people will do things like this as a consequence.
That said, there is NO excuse for killing someone over a book burning unless they are burning the last original Gutenberg Bible or the Declaration of Independence or the like. A Koran? Who cares? There are millions of them. A Bible? So what? It’s a book. I have at least 5 copies of every major religious work in my home, it’s not like the world is lacking for them. But these people are looking for excuses to go off the rails, and that’s all this was. The killers are the culpable party here, and nobody else. How could it be otherwise?

If he wants to condemn Islam then let him go do it somewhere where it means something - like a place where actual Muslims live. Let him go to to Kabul or Baghdad or Tehran or Riyadh or Cairo. He can spread the word there and tell some actual Muslims about the errors of their ways.

Evidently the facts here are subtle to escape the acute intellects at work. It’s in a civil war, brought on, rightly or wrongly by a US invasion and occupation. Now I suppose Pastor Jones could have traveled privately to Afghanistan and done circuits of Kabul and Helmad Province with a loudspeaker on a loop: “The US is here to disrespect your culture” but that would have taken the courage of convictions. Nah the easy option is to goad, thousands of miles from the front line held by someone else.
