9/11/10 Roll Call: I was here!

No need to say why, just post!

Posting from my Droid. Cannot search and link easily. I was there. If an old timer cares to, they can link the narrative posted on Sept 14 2001. " Everything Changed" is the title.
I am appreciative to those Dopers who were so concerned for me that day.
Ginger and Abby especially.
Peace to all. I awoke in LA… a weird place to be today. 9/11 is news but so is the upcoming pot convention.

Cartooniverse

I posted there as well, during the incident and in the days after.

Me too. Living where the TV cable was out, I only had the radio and the Dope to see me through the day. Thanks to all.

I live in the same apartment in Brooklyn as I did then.

Cartooniverse’s thread about his experiences working as an EMT in the immediate aftermath.

I was living and working in Manhattan when it happened - I saw the first tower fall from the window of my office on 21st Street. When the second tower fell, I was online, emailing my dad back in Israel and checking the Dope.

I spent a lot of time on the SDMB that day. I’m not sure I posted much. I’m not sure I could have.

I heard about it here.

I was here

I was here, in the sense that I was a participating member of the SDMB.

I am, in fact, sitting at the same desk as I was that morning.

I’m here.

It’s a gorgeous day outside today, a bit chilly but very bright. I might get out for a walk later and just breathe in.

I didn’t hear about it here, but it was my primary source of updates. The internet, especially news sites, came to a screeching halt.

I kept the Dope thread open and reloaded it as often as I could. I remember reading that a building was “leaning”.

I thought it was a bunch of crap and people are overreacting. When someone came to tell me a building fell, I scoffed. I didn’t believe it until I saw through the smoke of where it stood.

I had no access to TV, mind you. The Dope was dishing the Straight Dope even on current events.

I was at the Borders Group Corporate HQ in Ann Arbor MI. Someone said a plane had crashed into the WTC, and like many I thought it was a Cessna. You couldn’t find out information ANYWHERE – all the news sites were crashed. I came here to find out what was happening. Also I had requested a username change to my current username on Sept 10, 2001. I emailed Tubadiva not to worry about it but she said it gave her something to do. So I got this username later that day.

We later found out that all the employees of the Borders Store in 5 WTC were evacuated, but the building manager who got them out safely was killed. A while later, before they pulled down the remains of the structure, they let the General manager back in, to get the staff paychecks and her rolodex.

I was in a plane, traveling from Hong Kong to San Francisco. We found out about the attacks when we landed in Vancouver. The guy sitting next to me said “hey, this isn’t San Francisco!” Then, the pilot came on the speaker and told us what happened. He turned the radio to NPR (or something like NPR) and we all sat quietly and listened for about 2 hours before they let us off the plane. The airport was chaos, with many wide bodied planes being diverted from the US. My boyfriend at the time was able to drive up from Seattle to get me, my luggage arrived 2 weeks later. Going through the border was eerie - it was completely deserted and the guards asked us to get out of the car and everything in the car was checked (which was a very unusual border crossing experience).

Wow Glory, I’m glad you were able to get home.

I was working at the city, where we all were glued to any TV we could find.

My sister lives about 10 blocks from WTC and she was emailing me all the information she could.

I think I may have posted in that thread, I don’t remember.

I was here then, and I’m here now (all “get a life” comments taken as written). We had just come back from a holiday, and I had forgotten to shut the alarm clock off. It woke us up as we were trying to sleep in, and the news came on right away and woke us all the way up - we didn’t know what the hell we were listening to at first, but it sounded deadly serious. We got up and turned on the tv and the computer, firing up the Dope. I read about the towers falling from a Doper who was watching it before the tv was reporting it. I was actually fairly impressed that we didn’t get into World War III over it - I thought we were seeing the beginning of the end, basically.

I was here, and put my webcam on CNN for people to watch who had no access to TV (remember, most of the news websites crashed that day).

'Twas here as well.

I was working in a cubicle and did not even know what happened until lunch time.

I was here then and now…
