9/11 Anniversary B.S.

That’s how it was last time. I hear from KFWB (ALL NEWS, ALL THE TIME except during Dodger games!) that it won’t be that way this time.

The reason? Money. Many advertisers pulled their spots last 9-11 because they felt either few would see them or that those who saw them wouldn’t be in a frame of mind to accept them. So, there won’t be much income for TV stations doing memorials all day.

Whew! Having read through the postings on this particular subject, it’s pretty obvious that feelings are running high on BOTH sides.

Personally, I’d be just as happy if there were NO rememberances of 9/11. With the possible exception of some Amish folks in PA, I don’t think ANYONE has not seen footage, photographs or the original, live coverage of that awful day. I remember it well. I turned my TV on just in time to see the 2nd plane crash into the tower. I don’t NEED a “Day of Rememberance” to remind me of what I saw or what kept repeating over and over and OVER like some sick, twisted Dante-esque Instant Replay.

As you an tell by my location, I’m from Oklahoma. I’ve lived here all my life. In 1995 we had our own “Terrorist Attack” from an East Coast native named Timothy McVeigh. Now, in OKC, we have a lovely memorial complete with lighted reflective pool. We also have a MUSEUM that you can visit that has all sorts of artifacts from that event. Let me tell you about it…

You go into a room. The door locks behind you. You are in a mockup of an office in the Water Resources Board building which was across the street from the Murrah Building. A hearing was scheduled for 9 am that day and was being recorded. Two minutes into the tape you hear the explosion. The lights in the room go off…flicker on…and go off again. At that point, the wall is filled with pictures of those who died at that moment in time.

You go to the next room…and all the rooms after it…and you see displays of various things. One display case has nothing but watches in it, most all stopped at 9:02am. Another case has stuffed animals. Another one has keys. ANOTHER ONE has shoes. It’s not pretty and it’s not meant to be. I lived through the original OKC bombing. That was bad enough. To see how macabre the museum has made it is even worse.

THIS is why I feel a “Day of Rememberance” for 9/11 is not neccessary. It’s the same rerason our mothers told us not to pick at scabs. “If you don’t stop picking at it, it’ll never heal.”

How about we stop picking and start healing?

I was probably the only person on the North American continent who DIDN’T watch the TV on 9/11, me thinks.

I listened to the radio instead, and went driving around for a few hours.

I think 9/11 should be remembered, but not as a orgy of pathos and wailing that eventually degenerates into nationalism and a thirst for revenge. We are supposed to be better than that. The most dignified way we could spend this day would be spending time with our loved ones, not watching some politician with one eye on his carefully prepared speech and his other eye on his approval ratings try to take advantage for his own gain. I’m sure both parties have something up their sleeve in this regard.

Please do posthaste, and don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.
