I’ve followed this strip pretty closely for the last three years or so. Out of nowhere, they focused on a bunch of characters I don’t recognize or know how they connect to Edda and family, and have stayed with them for over a month. If the strip weren’t so well-drawn, I’d abandon it as self-indulgent tripe.
I know the nun is Edda’s old teacher and the fat guy is her mom’s neighbor Thorax. The pregnant woman, her husband, and the pseudo-God figure who looks like William Bendix are all mysteries to me and have never, to my knowledge, been introduced to the readers. Can someone connect the dots for me?
To sum up: the pregnant woman is Diane, a former nun at Edda’s school, her husband Francis a former priest.
Thorax may or may not be an alien, the pseudo-god is Monty, who may actually be God and once considered making Diane (the pregnant ex-nun) the mother of a new species by turning her baby into an intelligent cockroach.
All have long been characters in the strip, but due to the very drawn out timeframe you may not have seem much or any of them during the past year.
Chickweed’s long story lines can cause some confusion.
I do OK with that. It’s Pibgorn characters that I sometimes have trouble with. Brooke McElDowny draws both and likes to move some of his characters between the two strips.
He also has a tendency to draw his female subjects with similar features and changes their hair color causing more confusion.
Doesn’t mean she likes it. Of course, I’m not sure Sr. Caligula likes ANYTHING, to tell you the truth. You get the feeling she’d make acid remarks at fluffy kittens for not being fluffy enough.
I’m running out of patience for 9 Chickweed Lane pretty rapidly. The current storyline is protracted and dull, and it feels like an effort to spend time reading it.
