"900g cubed pumpkin" = how much in cups?

I have a recipe (from this thread) that calls for “900g” of cubed pumpkin. I actually have a kitchen scale, so once I have it in my kitchen I will be able to measure it properly. However, I can’t envision what “900g” of pumpkin looks like, so I don’t know, while at the store, how much pumpkin to buy. I can picture cups.

So can anyone tell me about how much pumpkin I’m looking at here? Either in cups or in some other easily envisioned measurement? I can’t just weigh a whole pumpkin and go on that since the rind and guts make up so much of a pumpkin’s weight.

And speaking of which… can you buy pumpkin “flesh” without buying a whole pumpkin and cleaning it yourself? Because that would be way easier. I’ve never looked for it though, and never noticed it anywhere.

Well, that’s 2 lbs.

So,what, 4 cups? That’s my guess.

Sure. Libby’s pumpkin.

Make sure you get this one and not this one.

900 grams is about 31 ounces. There’s 15 ounces in a can of pumpkin, so 2 cans, or about 4 cups. Pumpkin is forgiving; if you have a little more or a little less, it’s no big deal.

So canned pumpkin can be substituted for cubed pumpkin in a recipe? Or at least this recipe? Good to know. I actually have some of that already. Only one can, though, which probably isn’t 4 cups’ worth.

I don’t see why not, as long as you don’t absolutely need it to remain in chunks (in the final product).

I just checked and what I actually have is the pie mix one. I assume the cans are the same size, though, which is 30oz. Any idea how many cups that would be? I need to know how many cans to buy.

According to the conversion calculator I just used, 900 g is just under 32 oz. So, you need about 4 cups (each cup being 8 oz). So, if the can is 30 oz, you need just a bit more than one can - or buy smaller cans.

The density of pumpkin is approximately 1 (like that of most plant matter consisting mostly of water), so 900g is about 900 ml.

So I could just use one can and make all the other ingredients a little less. (It’s soup, not baking, so approximations should work fine). Right?

I made pumpkin pie for the first time Thursday. I used actual pumpkins, which I roasted in the oven. Two of them. Using 1-1/3 cups of pumpkin per pie, I ended up with five pies.

EDIT: Didn’t read the link. I’d assumed pies, not soup.

.

In most soup recipes I would not sub canned pumpkin for fresh. It does have a different flavor. If you do decide to use the canned pumpkin, double check to make sure you have plain solid pack pumpkin and not pumpkin pie filling, which will contain lots of other ingredients. Unless you like pumpkin pie enough to eat pumpkin-pie-flavored soup. Could be good.

Oh. I thought you were bringing this for your Thanksgiving, and I was about to ask how it went.
