.999 = 1?

Algorithms, one mans trash another mans treasure.

How do you feel about long division?

Or the “algorithm” know as the Lorentz equation which becomes useless upon
the introduction of the physically undefined concept of infinite precision when .999… is substituted for one.

I gotta say…the arrogance here…is staggering.

Math exists, in a vacuum.

Entirely apart from physics.

I suggest you think back to the integers and a time when an abacus was used
for trading goods.

Why do you think the integers were invented and defined rigorously…so you mathematicians could sit around and think of non-euclidean geometry and other abstract concepts.

Again the arrogance…just staggering.

Applied math, mathematical physics? Nope, no such thing. (or at the very maximum
useless stuff that hasn’t brought us anything)

I feel alright about it. It gives me 1/90 = .0111…, for what it’s worth. Which accords with [.0111…][.0111…] = .000123456789 + .000000000091/81

Please show me your steps since you appear to have done some iteration…also why are
you not using a multiplication algorithm? I don’t see any division on the left side of the inequality.

Remember, just because you can present 85 billion proofs, it means nothing if there is a SINGLE example of a disproof…that is the scientific method at work…and again…algorithms exist in the real world and are subject to the scientific method. How many dominoes can be toppled by 1 domino? 85 billion is doable if they are set up by someone with precise intervals.

I wonder how the NSA feels about long division

Hmm on second thought, given the physics concepts of extremely low frequency electromagnetic radiation which happens to correspond to brainwave frequencies maybe thats not such a good thing to think about after all. Particularly given that modulating lower frequencies in higher frequencies and even masking them behind 60 hz mains which is everywhere would be trivially easy via Cell phone towers etc.

But don’t mind me, just having a bit of fun, carry on gents.

(Got carried away and forgot that this is MATH forum and physics is well, irrelevant)

How is it that it’s always those that insist they are right, and everybody else is wrong, that complain about the others’ arrogance?

My understanding is that the NSA modulates brainwaves in those who are too close to discovering the truth about long division, using low frequency electromagnetic radiation masked by the ubiquitous presence of cell phone towers in the modern world.

Do you really believe this?

What I said was tongue in cheek and speculative.

The only thing I feel certain about is that you CANNOT separate math from physics the way you are ARROGANTLY trying to here on this forum.

Hmmm never mind…

“My understanding”

This implies you actually believe it to be true.

Indistinguishable…do you work for the NSA?

If not how did you arrive at this “understanding”?

Surely you are not going to contradict yourself right?

What makes calculating the square root of .75287999… any harder to calculate than the square root of .75288? By hand, I’m getting the same answer, as far as I’ve calculated so far. For either case, the calculation will take forever to complete.

Thank you sir.

Whats the difference?

The difference is…if you were given .75288 the number itself tells you when you can stop because it is FINITE PRECISION.

If you are given .75287999… you need to stop at infinity because that is an INFINITE PRECISION number (which has no real world symmetric concept)

Because we’re not immediately apologizing and giving a Fields medal to people who say things like:

Or:

It happens like clockwork in any sort of discussion involving crackpot math or science theories. We’ve offered proofs, disproved purported disproofs, pointed toward countless credible resources that also offer arguments or proofs, and it’s a waste of time. This isn’t even a hard problem; it’s just a matter of giving the proper definition of equality of real numbers.

The square root of .75288 doesn’t stop.

“we’re not immediately apologizing”

Hmm, is that implying that there is an apology down the road though?

What brand of calculator are you using? Tell me where I can find one please

Pencil and paper. It’s a pretty simple process to calculate square roots by hand.

Cool, I like how you are doing it, but one thing, if you calculate from now to the time you are dead…do you expect that you will have an infinite number of digits for your calculation?..are you willing to bet your life on that?
