_The Broken Eye_ by Brent Weeks (spoilers)

Anyone read The Broken Eye by Brent Weeks? It’s the third in the Lightbringer series, following The Black Brism and The Blinding Knife, and I have enjoyed all three quite a bit.

Some thoughts (spoilers likely):
I really enjoyed reading this, but… I feel like maybe Brent Weeks has bitten off more than he can chew. There is just SO MUCH going on. There are a bunch of main characters, from a bunch of viewpoints, but then there’s also tons of history, and mythology, and different systems of magic, and intrigue happening on many different levels, and theology, and digressions on the proper role of leadership and education, and a game clearly modeled on Magic: The Gathering, and not-very-clear geography, and characters who only show up once in the entire book but I’m supposed to remember who they are, and…

There were definitely some moments when I felt like it was supposed to be a revelation, but whatever it was revealing was something I completely forgot because I read about it two years and a thousand pages ago.

I don’t just feel like I should have reread the previous two books before reading this one. I felt like I should have re-read them and taken a lot of notes and then read a bunch of FAQs and then discussed them at length with other book readers before reading this one.

Despite that, I blazed through it and pretty much enjoyed myself the whole way, so take that for what it’s worth.

My brother recommended it. I’ll probably check it out.

Wow! I’m surprised at the lack of interest on this one.

I just finished re-reading the first two of this series and then the new one. I gotta say, they’re getting better and better. Nice story arc, the characters are developing, and the twist at the end of the third one was a big surprise.

Not sure if this is open spoilers or not, so I’ll spoiler this:
I didn’t see the Grinwoody twist coming at all; I thought he was as evil or more than Andross Guile himself. I also kept wondering when Gavin/Dazen would start doing… something to save himself. I just can’t believe he went from being so ultimately powerful to nothing. I suspect he’ll be drafting white at some point. But I wouldn’t be totally surprised if Weeks did a total flip and G/D ended up drafting black and being a Big Bad Evil.

I’m still not convinced that Kip is the Lightbringer. The prophesy seemed to fit G/D more than Kip. But we’ll see, I guess.
Well, he IS more evil than Andross, the order are probably the main bad guys on the series. The reveal about Ironfist is what shocked me, did not expect that at all.
