Absolutely stunning photos of Mongolia’s only female eagle huntress (using eagles for hunting, not hunting for eagles.)
Awesome, thanks for sharing!
I find the partnership between falconers and raptors to be absolutely astonishing. Thanks for posting.
Beautiful story and photography.
And cool image of a largely traditional Mongol family, still wearing furs and riding horses and hunting with eagles, gathered around a laptop computer.
I’ve been passing that around since the story & photos are amazing.
She looks so sweet & confident.
Great story and photos. I got to “hold” a female golden eagle on my arm last year in Scotland at a falconry center. She was HUGE, but like most birds, surprisingly lightweight for her size. I can only imagine how cool it is to actually hunt with them.
FWIW, I know an American woman who has been to eastern Kazakstan and hunted with Golden Eagles there.
(She is substantially older than 13.)
I keep wondering if it returns to her because it’s actually hunting her but she’s too heavy to carry off and eat.
Very cool.
Damn, but that is a big bird. Excellent photos - and I totally want a hat like that.
Error in the copy:
Ashol-Pan’s hat is amazing, no matter what the temperature. (Here’s hoping she vanity searches, finds this post, and offers me a hat)
What’s the error?
Beautiful photos, and I like both of her hats. But the one with the red crown?
That’s some bad hairy hat.
It gives the temperature as the same in Celsius and Fahrenheit.
And a neat article–thanks for sharing!
Which at -40 is correct.
Cute girlie. The sport is a bit cruel but at least it’s renewable (both hunter and quarry.) That sheep carcass left as a farewell present is very touching.
I’d assumed his comment meant that it should just be “-40” and left as an exercise for the reader to figure the rest out.
I know - I really liked knowing that! It shows a lot of respect for the eagles (and common sense) to let them go again. The last photo was probably my favourite because it shows such affection and a bonding moment.
Also, I want her hat as well. And the boots, which look amazingly comfortable.
Beautiful. Thank you.
Error in the error in the copy call. :smack:
