London dopers: my husband’s son is going to london in august - is there five things he absolutely MUST see? A little insght: a bit ecclectic; into Annie Defranco music (don’t ask - I haven’t a clue), reading, outside circle interest in buddhism, non-smoker (and dislikes smokey places), is very thrifty; folk music (Bob Dylan, etc.), no tattoos but girlfriend has piercings (facial, mostly, never asked about any others  ); 20 years old, that’s about all I can tell you.
Thank you for the help! Any time anyone wants information about Toronto area stuff, let me know!
The ice bunnies and snow snakes are awaiting visitors!
I’m sure someone who’s lived here a lot longer than I will be along shortly (owlstretchingtime), but:
-> Camden Market. I’d recommend it to anyone aged between 14 and 25 and in any way into rock/alternative scene. There’s stalls selling all sorts of youth-oriented stuff: rock T-shirts, bootleg CDs, henna tattoos, all kinds of jewellery, even magic mushrooms (they’re legal here if they’re fresh rather than prepared)
Disclaimer: I haven’t tried any myself.
OTOH, don’t buy any of the marijuana from the pushers who hang around Camden Town: it’s not legal and you won’t get what you paid for anyway.
If nothing takes your fancy to buy you can at least try some of the freshly-made hot apple juice and dipped corn-on-the-cob.
-> Charing Cross Road is the place to go for the big bookshops: there’s a Borders, Blackwells, and the big independent bookstore Foyle’s right next to each other. There’s normally some bargain boxes–you could spend hours just rifling through them on each floor.
There’s a few little independent bookstores as well. There are other independent bookstores dotted around the rest of the city, but the biggest concentration are here. Get off the tube at Leicester Square station and walk towards Tottenham Court Road station (or vice versa, of course)
I’m afraid I don’t know much about folk music or Buddhism. I’m sure there’ll be some attractions in these areas but someone else’ll have to tell you about those.
This thread has a lot of info on london in it from me and other residents:
For folkie music he might want to check out the 12 Bar Club in Denmark st - they have a lot of that stuff.
Camden market sounds right up his street. I know sod all about budhism (apart from the fact that as a bald fat chap I look like him), but there is a Buddhist pagoda in Battersea park.
