A 50 Megaton headache

Sometimes I feel perfectly fine then stand up or exert myself in some other way and suddenly I feel like my head is going to EXPLODE?
It seems to settle down to a low grade behind-the-eyes ache within a few minutes.

What the heck is up with that?

Granted this rarely happens, and most of the time its after I’ve had a touch too much. But just today, I’m at the gym and BAM, I can hardly stand up. I rest for a bit, feel better, exercise some more, and BAM again.
I vaguely remember reading something about exertion headache before, but now all I can find it etailers pushing advil, the only problem is that the headache is gone before I get to the medicine cabinet. Anyone know of causes, or preventions? (besides taking it easy)

This sounds like a problem for real doctors not online amateurs.

That said, it could be migraines, in which case the first question your doctor will probably ask you is if you smoke. Along with all the other wonderful things they do for you, cigarettes appear to be related to migraine headaches.

It is not a migraine. It sounds like a circulatory problem. When a person suddenly stands, we suffer from a very slight case of low blood pressure. Yours sounds a little worse than most. Get it checked right away before you hurt yourself by fainting.

See a real doctor ASAP. Chronic headaches, even intermittent ones, are often the pre-cursor(s) to all sorts of fairly nasty problems, some life threatening.

I am a real doctor.

You need to make an appointment fast.

Generally, the rule with headaches is ‘the worse the pain, the less life threatening it is’. (that’s sardonic medical humor with a core of truth) However, there is one exception; if you are leaking blood into the CSF fluid around your brain, it’s usually ‘the worse headache of you life’.

This can mean an aneurysm, a subarachnoid hemorrhage or any number of things that can be life threatening in seconds, if the thing decides to blow.

Now, to put this in perspective: everyone has a ‘worst headache of their life’, and most people have several (i.eay have a headache when you’re five, a worse one when you’re ten, a worse one when you’re twenty, and another when you’re fifty – each is the ‘worse so far’) BUT VERY FEW END UP WITH THESE LIFE THREATENING CONDITIONS.

So don’t freak out. But you do want to get rid of the headaches, don’t you? See a doc. And don’t expect him to find the answer in one visit. Realistically, it rarely works that way except with the commmonest types.

follow doc KP’s advice!

i had headaches happen intermittnly for a while until finally i ended up in the hospital for two weeks. at first they thought it could’ve been an aneurysm as well, turned out to be migraines, not much better, just means i have to live with the pain.

see a doctor NOW!

I have the same problem you have, i’ll be fine and then get up to do something and BAM! Except mine lasts for hours.

Take a look at your Caffine intake. I used to drink pop and coffee all the time, everyday, allday. Then I lost all interest in it and tried to stop drinking that crap. I noted that when my intake was little to none, I would get these headaches when standing up to quickly like you mentioned. And when I started drinking more caffine drinks I would not have them. For me it was like Caffine withdrawls. I don’t know if there related, but I’ve taken note to this a lot and they seem very related.

Ok you screwballs, despite my common sense tellng me you guy dont have a clue, I did see a doctor for my occasional headaches.
I told him I infrequently have headaches agitated by exertion, and these almost always occur after I have been drinking although the one on Tuesday wasn’t. I also told him that several people suggested it could be an aneurysm.
His advice was blinding flash of common sense:
Try to moderate your drinking.
Take some ibuprophen.
If I have a headache, I should take it easy
(and I swear I’m not makeing this up) Those guys are idiots.
In fact he went on quite a tirade about it, using the word “idiots” at least 6 times.

As for preventing these headaches, my $85 bought me this advice:
Have a bananna and lots of water before working outs.

All this said, I think Farmer advice may me more accurate. I never slug coffee when I’m hung over, and the coffee shop flavors were pretty crappy on Tuesday so I ended up not finishing my mug.
