Did anyone else play this game? I picked it up a little late, in the bargain bin, but it’s been a lot of fun. I read some reviews that had some complaints but they seem unjustified to me.

The buildings looked kind of drab. Well, I guess this isn’t a totally unreasonable complaint but I personally didn’t even notice it until someone mentioned it. The game seems to move so flawlessly for me that I’d happily take a graphics hit anyway for this kind of control. It seems popular for gamers to discuss “gameplay not graphics” but anytime someone listens they get shit for it.

Some of the controls are bad. Mostly I think this is related to the X+B combo on the 360 controller. It’s certainly less natural than X+Y or Y+B which are “one-thumbers.” Still, after about twenty hours of playing around I’ve gotten used to it. I think the main difficulty is that the game is meant to be pretty fast-paced and having to strategically move your hand on the controller breaks some of the immersion. It’s a fair-ish complaint from that standpoint, but I wouldn’t knock the rating down for it.
My big complaint is that for a free-world game, it feels very empty. You get sidequests like collecting orbs, wreaking havoc, movement prowess tests, and some other things, but they feel kind of “more of the same.” I’m already mastering movement just to play the game, I wreak havoc cuz I can anyway, and I’m out and about scouring for webs (people whose memory you can consume to learn about the backstory) in the first place so collect quests feel really tacked on. I think this is a problem with open world games in general, actually. Experience is also given so freely that your natural urge to just go nuts on the city earn you so much you’re never feeling behind the curve in unlocking powers, and in fact the designers seemed to know this as some things only unlock as you complete the story.
Still, I have been having a lot of fun with it. Anyone else play it, have comments?
The sequel is scheduled to be released this April.
