A blast from the past

In Walmart today, I saw a guy wearing a very unusual T-shirt. It said “Rhodesia,” and it had what looked like the Rhodesian coat of arms.

I talked to him briefly, and he was originally from there. His accent was one that I’ve never heard before.

You’re certainly in the right forum.

I’ve met some Rhodesians. They’re South Afrikaners now, but I’m not sure how long that will last before they’re displaced again.

I work with a younger Zimbabwean. It seems like the Rhodesians could have saved themselves a lot of trouble if they’d just stuck it out. Or maybe not. Hard to tell, given the stories he tells. Sometimes I can’t believe this is the 21st century, actually. Or maybe the calendar is different in Zimbabwe, and it’s not the 21st century yet.

I suppose it says a lot that this brilliant engineer worked in the UK and now for us in the USA.
