A Christmas (Card) Story

Last night Welbywife grabbed the irresponsible male child of the house by the ear, gave him a stinging lecture on responsibility, politeness, and Christmas in general, and made him sign Christmas cards all night instead of letting him, say, play videogames until bedtime.

He was very upset about this, and it was totally obvious that he not only didn’t want to do Christmas cards and didn’t care about Christmas cards, he in facts hates Christmas cards with a passion bordering on psychosis.

Maybe it’s the writing, the addressing, the stamping. Whatever it is, he really didn’t enjoy the process. There was some fear of a temper tantrum.

Luckily, when it was all over, I still had about 45 minutes for a little NeverWinter Nights gaming.

What’s your take on the whole Christmas card thing? I don’t like them much, because they’re time consuming and most of my friends don’t send me one, and none of my family do. We’re all e-mail types. I don’t see spending a bunch of money on something that’s not really appreciated. How about other Dopers?

I hate sending Christmas cards, so I don’t. They are expensive, time consuming to write out some kind of message and address envelopes and then they have to be taken to the post office. I fail to see why it’s necessary to do this on top of everything else that goes on during the holiday season. Personally, I’ll be glad when the whole damn seson is over. Bah! Humbug! I hope the Grinch wins this year.

In the past, I’ve sent fewer and fewer each year - still it was pretty much a quick note to relatives I haven’t seen or (in the case of hubby’s family) met. This year, I’ve sent nary a card. I think I will sit down this evening and dash off a couple to his old aunts. But that’ll be it.
