That used to be on the sign at the Long Rifle Lodge outside Sutton, AK.
Along with bears getting into our cars, they have ripped the door off of my shed three times. We don’t get trash service and I have to keep the household trash somewhere in between trips to the land fill. Last time I rebuilt door, I included some oak. Seems to help.
And really, the whole point I was going to make is - moth balls. I crush them around the door to my shed and right inside. A snoot of that up the nose seems to deter them.
Or worse!
“But Yogi, you know the park rules! No beating up the Ranger after 6:00.”
“I don’t care, Boo-boo! He stole my pcik-a-nick basket! I’m going to kick his ass!”
Do you really want to annoy a bear?
I’ve used mothballs to deter lots of things.
With one exception. We have a burn barrel and I sprinkle mothballs around it to keep feral hogs from tipping it over.
I looked out there one evening and saw feral hogs eating the mothballs.
I bet they had a belly-ache.
Have you seen them since? If not perhaps you did upset their delicate tummies.
Have you seen them again rooting around in search of more of those tasty crunchy truffles you set out? I’d sooner expect that result. Whatever else you might say about feral hogs, ISTM they have stomachs built to happily eat absolutely anything and everything.
Now I just sit on the deck and shoot the little shits.
We have a brand new spring crop of sweet little piglets.
Thank you Mother nature for making it possible for feral hogs to reproduce and somehow have 20 piglets per litter.
Excuse me, I gotta go buy more ammo.
Blast forth!!
That’s why the Spanish explorers turned them loose here. Bacon on the hoof without using their food resources.
Do you get regular moths & neuter them yourself?
when bears discover fire, then should we start worring

Beck, up thread, you said you carry a long gun for bears when walking dogs. What do you carry?
I don’t walk with a rifle or revolver myself, and am more concerned about moose. You know those nice gentle beasts that aren’t afraid of anything (be concerned about things that aren’t afraid).
When the bears got in our cars last fall, I kept a Marlin 336er chambered in .356 win a little closer (it’s sort of a rare caliber).
Note, I don’t want to shoot any, as I am in their space. Safe distance is fine.
I have a Win. 70, featherweight I like to carry
Mr.Wrekker would rather I carry Rem 30.06. I hate that gun.
The Winchester is like the Riflemans gun. And, baby I can shoot from the hip and spin it around!
I kid. I know better than that.
That’s ol’beckdawrek, right there.
A show of hands: Are you turned on by women who shoot?
A show of hands: Do you think that’s irrelevant in a thread about bears being killed for eating people?
