A crank caller just told me I won Mass Cash

Somebody just phoned me to say I had won $100,000 in Mass Cash (the Massachusetts scratch-off lottery). Since I NEVER play this I know it’s a hoax.

I said thanks and hung up.

p.s. – His name and phone number were in Caller ID!!

Wouldn’t you have to scratch off a ticket to win? You should have said something like, “How did you know?!?!”

Look up his address. Google maps to get a photo of his house.

Call him back and tell him that you and your buddies are coming over to collect. It’s the house on the corner of X Street and Y Avenue with the green awning, right? Is it OK if our “club” parks their Harleys out front?

Actually I did Google and find a picture of his house. But I’m not going!!!

Actually, I think he may be the guy who delivered bookcases yesterday. The person who phoned mentioned my full name and phone number when I said it was the wrong number. And the phone is not listed in my name.

It’s more than a crank call. It’s a fraud. If you didn’t hang up he would ask you to pay a $50 “processing fee” before you can collect your prize.

These people call thousands of numbers and give the same story. Inevitably some of those HAVE bought tickets, and some of those will be fooled into stumping up cash.

I don’t know how he got your name or number, but it’s probably not the guy who delivered your bookcase.

If ratatoskK has his name it’d be pretty easy to find out if it is in fact the guy who delivered the bookcases.

I don’t have the name of the bookcase guy, it was a shipping company.

And they can fake caller-ID very easily. A call centre can program anything into its outgoing caller-ID; reputable companies put their real call-back number. Scammers? Well… these days I am deluged by calls from 1-000-000-0000, which isn’t even a real number.
