A Cricket World Cup

Yeh Bangladesh have certainly appeared to be the worst team in the competition, including all 4 non test playing nations.
I read something in the paper today in regards to kenya possibly becoming a test playing team saying that if they have the right then so do scotland and ireland (or some such nonsense)

Well, Kenya’s not ready for Test status either. They don’t play regular first-class cricket, nor do they play much other than limited-overs. A couple of their players (Steve Tikolo, for certain) have experience in f-c cricket, but it’s a foreign game to the rest of the side. A better option now would be to put Kenya in South Africa’s SuperSport series, if that’s what the domestic competition is still called. I’d reckon that in a few years they’d be performing decently there, but even then I’d be hesitant to see them elevated to Full Member status.

Well, I’m sure much to everyone’s surprise, Kenya made a start of 75/0 against India, though it took them 22 overs to get there. A total of 200-220 looks on the cards, which may well be difficult to chase under the lights.

Sri Lanka are 5/100 after 26, chasing 320. Not today, methinks. Worse still, their captain retired hurt. Looks like Lee broke his wrist. That’s very bad news for the Sri Lankans.

All the signs point to an India/ Australia final.

Sanath Jayasuriya’s wrist is not broken. Whew. You’d hate to see another great player miss the rest of the action. The X-ray did show up a chipped thumb from some other episode though.

BBC is the latest to report that US could host a couple of the 2007 World Cup matches. While some of the West Indian countries object to handing the US any matches, I think it would be a good idea. There are certainly thousands of expats and students from the Commonwealth, enough to fill stadiums.

Not hyperbole to say India crushed Sri Lanka.

Wow, all the SL wickets fell to the quicks, or sort-of-quicks. When’s the last time that happened in an Indian innings?

Am I the only (british) person to feel totally underwhelmed by this world cup. Not just englands performance but the total lack of airplay for any of the games - not even highlights?

When’s the last time that happened in an Indian innings?

in an Indian innings ? Plenty of times

By Indians? In the last 10 years, I reckon 3-4 times.

…the real Chess game of the tournament, New Zealand vs Australia, has begun. 24-2 at the moment, NZ’s main strike bowler Shane Bond has picked up two wickets, Vittori was first change, and the last over he bowled was an absolute curler…THIS will be one of the games of the tournament…

If the final comes down to Oz and India and India played like they did against Sri Lanka, then India definitely have a chance of winning.

…Australia are 91-7, 30 overs gone…

Aus 208/9 - 50 overs.

The kiwis could win this

… but then managed to get 208, thanks to Bevan and Bichel. Bloody Australians!
(owl - it’s all on Sky Sports 3. I think it’s a bit crap that there isn’t a daily highlights packager on terrestrial telly)

I know its on sky. However the fact that there isn’t even a highlights package on TV proper is all wrong.

Apparently C4 weren’t interested and the BBC said they were buggered if they were going to act as cheerleaders for C4’s test coverage.

It is a real own goal, especially as the time zone is so media friendly

That’s what I mean - I don’t understand why the highlights are all on Sky with bugger all on terrestrial. Sounds like the BBC cutting off their nose to spite their face.

Trust Australia to come back.

NZ 33/3

The Kiwis are now 7/104. An intriguing game, but Australia will win from here. The Kiwis - if they can make the semis - are still a threat, but they look a bowler short. Cairns not really be able to bowl makes a huge difference.

Hey, BigNik, any change in your opion of Shane Bond?

And Australia have won - quite comfortably in the end it seems, thanks to Brett Lee’s bowling…

Anyone betting against them to lift the trophy?
