As Straight Dope administrator, Ed Zotti, strode down the hallway of the Chicago Reader office, he noticed a small, red, metallic box affixed to the wall outside of Cecil Adams’ office. The box had not been there before, and had therefore immediately caught his attention. As he walked closer, he saw that the box had a dark-tinted glass panel affixed to the front and it was permanently sealed shut. Curious, he cupped his hands around his eyes, pressed his nose against the front of the box and peered through the smoky glass. Inside, he saw an unopened container of Morton’s iodized salt. He then noticed a small sign on the wall, to the immediate right of the box, with a wooden gavel dangling on a hook below. The sign read, “In case of Slug emergency, break glass with hammer”
