A different zip code question

Why do I bother addressing an envelope with City/State? Doesn’t the zip code already tell the post office everything they need to know?

Can I send a letter addressed to:

PO Box 513
02052

Sure you could, and the letter would probably get there – to 02052, anyway.

The city and state serve as a check for the PO sorters. If the city and state don’t match the zip, the post office either kicks it out (I’ve gotten stuff like this back “undeliverable”) or sends it to the city or the zip code and hopes they get it right.

You probably could shorten it even further:

02052-0513

I few years ago I sent a couple of test letters to my PO box with such an address.
They arrived in the box, but with a USPS sticker asking me to advise the correspondent of my correct address.
