A few days in Indianapolis- what interesting things can be done?

Diosa Please let us know how your trip was and what you ended up doing here.

Thank you for asking for a follow up, Spud!

We ended up not having too much down time (which, given our reason for visiting, isn’t necessarily a bad thing!), but let’s see. . . Oh, a lot of this is where we ate, since we didn’t do much except on Friday!

We were staying at the Omni downtown, which was absolutely lovely. The Union Station across from the hotel was just STUNNING-- is that even being used for anything right now? I wanted to explore it, but didn’t have a chance.

Anywho! We had dinner Wednesday night at Laria’s and it was fabulous. Not only was the food good, but they were great about seating our party of 8 quickly and kindly dealing with the hassle of taking orders for 6 high school students. . . and splitting the tab for them, too. Great, great little spot.

Thursday night, we hoofed it over to Monument Circle and got ice cream at the South Bend Chocolate Cafe. I got “The Gipper” (chocolate chocolate ice cream, fudge, chocolate covered peanuts. . . 10,000 other chocolate items) and it was seriously AMAZING. Plus, it was lovely sitting on the steps of the monument, watching the sun go down, and the buildings light up. Great little evening there!

Friday, we had breakfast at Patachou and that was freaking AMAZING. In fact, we went back Saturday morning to replicate the experience. I got “An Omelet You Can’t Refuse” (bacon, potatoes, cheddar, and sour cream) and holy moly, that was amazing. Oh, and they have this cinnamon toast that was just to die for- we all got it and couldn’t stop talking about it. The mocha I got there was also just fantastic. Highly suggest breakfast there!

After breakfast, I took a vote with the kids and they decided that they wanted to hit up the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. The museum was the perfect mix of art, history, and interactive stuff to keep the kids entertained-- plus they have a motorcycle exhibit right now which the boys loved. After the museum, we walked over to the IMAX and watched their polar bear movie (excellent!) and the tornado movie (not so excellent-- you know it’s bad when a bunch of 17 year old boys were raving about polar bears over tornados).

And, for the most part, that’s what we did. Oh, though on Wed and Fri, I did manage to duck out with some other coaches (which the other coach I work with watched the boys) and we went to the Howl At the Moon. SUCH A FUN BAR! Seriously! Their live band is just awesome.

Glad you had a great time here… and wonderful that it sounds like your kids did well in their tournament.

I’m very proud of our town and what it has evolved into. I’m pretty sure from his input that Munch feels the same. I feel we are sometimes in a battle against people like Danja or dropzone who seem to love to continue an old stereotype that we are some backwater town.

Patachou actually has a location within walking distance from my house… I can’t believe I forgot to mention it before.

If you ever find yourself back here I would recommend you try the Children’s Museum. No matter if you are a kid, or just have an inner child in you somewhere you will love it.

Glad you had a good time, Diosa. I hope you don’t mind if we keep using this thread to add good things to do/see in Indy.

I thought of another small attraction that might interest some - the Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library. It’s nothing big and impressive or anything, but an interesting little stop that’s convenient to anyone downtown. (It’s also across the street from the Bourbon Street Distillery, a great place for sitting out on the patio with a beer and a pulled pork sandwich.)
