I'm moving to Indianapolis.

That is all.

I’ve only been to Indy a couple times in my life. Both times, I was shocked by the traffic. Good luck!

I lived there for five years. I loved it! I only left because I love my husband more.

Expand (expound?) on this please. What did you love about it? Why did you love it? Do you like car races held annually on Memorial Day weekend, or something else (hopefully  )? If so, what?

I’m probably going to sound silly, but … I liked the feel of it. I grew up in a small town in a rural county, and I wasn’t really interested in living in a big city like NYC or LA or Chicago. Indianapolis was big enough for me to enjoy the amenities that you get with cities, but it had a laid-back feel.

I loved the Broad Ripple area. If MezzaLuna is still open in Broad Ripple, and you like that sort of thing, you should get the three-cheese pasta, and add spinach. You will lick your plate.

I never cared much one way or another about race weekend (traffic was a little nuts, but I lived in the NE part of town, so it was manageable), though I did go to the 500 one year, and enjoyed myself. I don’t care about going back, but it was a great experience once. The flyover that year featured a couple of B2 bombers, which may have made more of an impression on me than the race. Yikes.

There’s a half-marathon there sometime before the 500. I volunteered a lot with the NPR and PBS stations, and they always ran the water stop at the 9th mile. I was there every year I lived there. That’s one part of the race festival I really did enjoy, I guess.

I do remember that traffic in the NE part of town in late November and December made me homicidal. There were two malls right there that were the places to shop. Don’t know if that’s the same.

I enjoyed the art museum when I lived there. If you’re used to the Metropolitan Museum of Art or something, you’ll be less happy, no doubt. I just liked going and wandering around there in the quiet and taking things in.

I probably remember it fondly because I remember that period in my life fondly. I liked my job when I lived there (except right at the end), I liked the area I lived in, I liked the people I knew. (And I had a lot of disposable income. That never hurts.)

Is that enlightening at all, or just sort of rambly?

Go to Shapiro’s and have rye bread and cheesecake (although not together). You won’t regret it.

After seeing your username, I was going to tell you about the Indianapolis Ice, who were always fun to watch. It appears that they went away in 2004, and there is a team now called the Indiana Ice. No idea about them. I wouldn’t get snotty either way, though. Hockey’s always fun in person!

ETA: Oooooh. I forgot about Shapiro’s. Listen to Brynda, who speaks wise words.

It’s cold up there. No SEC football, grits, or sweet tea. Folks talk funny…and too fast.

On the plus side, the Colts are almost never horrible, and you’ll probably live near or work with somebody that knows how to cook brats. Not children. At least I assume not. Sausages. WAY better than any hot dog ever thought about being.

I’ve been there once. I noticed that the walk/don’t walk signs have a little countdown clock. This lets a pedestrian know how much time they have to get across.
It also lets drivers know when they can start drag racing.

Hi, soon-to-be neighbor! I’m a life-long resident and would be glad to answer any questions you might have. Respond here or PM me if you’d like.

Oh, there’s plenty of sweet tea, you just need to know where to look (seems there are a lot of southern transplants opening restaurants). One thing there is a lack of is quality BBQ, though. But if you like steak, you’re all set.

You posted a substitute teacher question yeseterday, didn’t you? Don’t know much about that market (oddly enough, I overheard two people in the elevator talking about sub jobs yesterday as well), but just curious if you found something, and if you have a particular area you’ll be targeting to live.

If you have any specific questions, please feel free to PM or e-mail me as well.

Wishing you luck and joy in your new home!

Sorry, that must have been someone else. I’m a lawyer in the rural South.

My experiences in Indy have been ambivalent–and lobotomyboy63 is right about the traffic. Bloomington, however, is one of my favorite towns. Check out the Casablanca Cafe, along with about a hundred other things. Good luck!

Sorry - that question was posed to Frylock.

Really? I spent a couple of months in Indianapolis this past spring helping my father move to assisted living. I was blown away by how little traffic there was! I guess it’s all relative.

Hey another new neighbor!

As it’s been said, Indy is really a good in-between from big city and country. It’s a relatively big TV market too (26th I think) so we get some cool concerts/special events that come through here.

Why the move anyway?

I’ve visited Indianapolis a few times. On the traffic issue, I felt that Interstate 465 was just an overcrowded racetrack, but that once you got off the interstates traffic wasn’t too bad.

Haha. So true.

Gross. Why? Especially when there are much better states a little bit to the left of Indiana.

Have fun trying to figure out what time it is. But I do seem to remember that Indy has the cheapest cost of living of all U.S. metro areas. So there’s that.
