My son is keeping one at my house, and says I’m welcome to use it.
At the risk of sounding very, very dumb, I have a couple questions. Is the monitor meant for viewing only content that is produced or broadcast in 3D? Like, it can’t make any source content appear to be 3D, right? Or does it?
If you are talking about a 3D TV, then in most cases 2D content will only be shown in 2D, and 3D content can be displayed in 3D or 2D. Some sets, however, have a 2D to 3D converter setting that creates a pseudo-3D image from 2D content. The results are hit-or-miss.
Converting 2D to 3D is like converting black-and-white to color. There’s information missing there that you really can’t get back, so the best you can do is guess. Based on the context, you might be able to make guesses that look pretty good, or you might not, and you’ll make better guesses the more context you have available. Computers can be programmed to make these guesses, too, but they’re generally not as good at it as humans, especially if they’re trying to do it quickly. A TV that converted 2D to 3D while you watched it would have to do so really quickly, which means that the results will probably look terrible.
It’s an LG Flatron. So, it’s intended to render specifically 3D content. Oh, well, I knew that it was kind of defying logic to expect otherwise. I was just hoping for maybe some kind of modern wizardry.
Because The Fifth Element would be so awesome in 3D!!!
