Here’s another McGuffin: the Sampo of the Finnish epic, “The Kalevala.” The Sampo is a mysterious, valuable device that may or may not be a mill of some kind–to mill grain, as well as money. In general, it’s just valuable and was tough to make (the only one capable of forging it was Ilmarinen, who also forged the sky).
