Correct me if I’m wrong here, but wasn’t Denmark the country whose people showed such courage and selflesness during WWII? Am I thinking of another country whose citizens helped smuggle their Jewish neighbors out, and then left the vacant homes unlooted and unvandalized? Was Christian the second, who demanded the right to visit those Danish Jews the Nazis did get, and thus prevented any of them from being put in death camps, king of someplace else?
If not, and Denmark is the country that I’m thinking of, I beg you to explain exactly what in the fucking hell happened.
Nationalism+Patriotism+Political Demagoguery
Rule of thumb - if the Tories call for mandatory something-or-other regarding immigrants, it’s either impractical or illegal.
Specifically regarding TB - nobody can be refused refugee status because of their having an infectious disease. If you don’t like it, take the argument to the UN.
And if health issues among immigrants are to be questioned, maybe it would be better to properly implement systems where they can receive the treatment that we take for granted, where children will without delay be brought up to date with immunisations, etc etc?
=???
Profit!
I am married to a Dane, and we decided that we did not want to live in Denmark. Inmigration trouble was the least of our problems, but still we both feel that it places and undue burden on both of us, and we both find the new Danish inmigration laws to be too restrictive. They have a right to do so, but with that they have actually condemned my husband to exile, not that I wanted to live there anyways.
I love Denmark, I have yet to find a Dane I didn’t like. And I understand that restrictive inmigration policies are sometimes set to fix a problem and end up causing unnecessary grief on innocent people. My own country has done the same as DK, so I understand a little what they are going trough right now.
I hope they will swing back to the center, I feel that DK has been hijacked by a sizeable minority, but a minority nonetheless.

Indeed. And that’s one of the reasons I’ve been so dissapointed by the recent evolution in Denmark. It seemed to be a country that never does anything wrong, and each time I read/ heard something about Denmark, it gained more brownie points in my mind for one reason or another (I never went there).
Until these elections…
(Another country that dissapointed me recently was Ireland, but not to the same extent because my expectations weren’t as high)
Yep I too have been disappointed in the Irish gov. and with quite a large section of the population of late

Sorry, I’m with Denmark here. Seems to me the people of a country have every right to pass immigration laws to define who may, and may not, immigrate to their country. I know the 88 year old tubercular senior citizen seems like a tragic case, but if she has no legal right to be in Denmark, then she has no legal right to be in Denmark.
And there it is, plain and simple.

Bricker: * Seems to me the people of a country have every right to pass immigration laws to define who may, and may not, immigrate to their country.*
Bricker, once again you seem to be focusing on process when what’s being discussed here is ethics.
I have yet to see Bricker show the balls to come out and say something like “this law is unjust.”

That’s pretty fucked up. Can you supply more details? I’d be interested in learning them.

I didn’t hear any mention of the woman being a refugee. That’s completely different from immigration.
Also, many people in countries that receive large numbers of immigrants in fact have no health care themselves. Are you suggesting that the already scarce funds for public health be diverted to care for every sick foreigner who happens to show up on your doorstep?
I have not been in Denmark in over 30 years. And although immigration laws were restrictive then, the people were as warm and friendly and welcoming as any I’ve ever known. The laws were restrictive because it, along with other Scandanavian countries, was such a desirable place to live.
I am thinking that this woman has been caught in beaucratic red tape. I cannot imagine the warm-hearted Danes sending this woman back to Pakistan – especially since the concept of family is so important in Danish life.
When were these new laws passed?

Political junkies who have been following politics in Europe should by now be aware of the Danish rise of the far right and the subsequent shift to a shade of brownish lately.
In the latest news, an 88 year old Pakistani woman, suffering from tuberculosis, is to be deported from Denmark to Pakistan this week. Never mind that the woman has children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Denmark who wants to take care of her, while she has no immediate family in Pakistan anymore. Never mind that she can no longer cook for herself, dress herself, or walk stairs. The woman does not qualify for a residence permit according to the new harsh immigration laws. After all, she came to Denmark only two years ago. So out she goes.
On which I just want to say: Fuck you!
Oh yeah, the links, Danish only:

I know that Danish Immigration laws really suck, but don’t say “Fuck you” to the whole of Denmark. All of the Danes that I know are against the strict immigration laws, just the way I am against the policies of GWB. Just because the government does one thing, doesn’t mean that all of the people approve.
I take it you’re Swedish?
Then since she isn’t likely to be much a public charge, and her family were willing to care for her, I wonder why they couldn’t successfully obtain an exception from her?
Think skin color, but that’s just a hunch. According to the wires, this woman was turned down on appeal.

Are you suggesting that our refugees should be classified based on their health status, and that those who fail to meet a certain threshold be discarded? In that case, a fuck you to you too. Not that this thread is about refugees, it’s about the Danish desirability to keep people of a certain color/culture/religion out of their country.

In Europe, well in most of Europe, everyone has access to health care. And since we’re amongst the richest people on the face of this planet, yes, I do believe that health care should be extended to doorstep refugees and immigrants. It’s the Christian thing to do, to share with those who has nothing. But that’s entirely a different subject, maybe.

Well,I do say fuck you to the whole of Denmark (this is the Pit). I’m tired of hearing excuses like “it’s the government, not the people”. The ruling coalition came to power much because of promises to tighten up immigration laws. The Danish electorate had ample opportunity to reject this and they chose not to. Noone has claimed that most Danes are against, so pardon me blue while I don’t take your “friends” as a valid cite.

It was an answer to the final question in Doc Cathode’s post.
Neo-nazism, xenophobia, casual racism are all rife under the jovial surface in all Scandinavian countries, including my own.
Blacks from the US are cool, blacks from Africa are sub-human. The Moslem Threat to Our Way of Life™ is a truism for everyone but The Liberal Media. “I’ve got nothing against Pakistanis, but…” or “One can’t voice any criticism for fear of being called a racist” or I’m not a racist, but them Moslem girls shouldn’t be allowed to wear that scarf.
Sweden and Denmark took in a lot of refugees from former Yugoslavia during the early 90’s, something which coincided with a slump of the economy. Most of these refugees couldn’t get jobs and ended up on welfare. The bad economy erorded the tax base for the much touted Welfare State that’s been the model for the Scandinavian countries post WWII. This meant less benefits for the ‘natives’ and the refugees got the blame, leading to the current situation, which is getting exploited by fringe parties. Dansk Folkeparti, the Danish People’s Party, has been the most succesful in Scandinavia, winning 22 of 179 seats in the parliament, being the third largest party and being able to become part of the government, in order for the Conservative party (strangely called ‘The Left’) to form government.

Well, that’s true, blinx.
What’s true about it? If the health care is truly free, then there must be institutionalized slavery.
