I then said that the answer was 27 693
The next number: 4234
I then give you the number 5765
I need another number: I’m taking 3426, from mouthbreather’s post, just to not leave you hanging again 
I now give you the number 6573
So take the four digit numbers, and add them up:
7695 + 4234 + 5765 + 3426 + 6573 = 27 693
There you go, just as I said, with only the first number to go by!

I dont know whether to be unimpressed, amused, confused, or whooshed by this thread. Let make sure I have this straight.
A+B+C+D+E=X, and we are supposed to be impressed that you can make this work when you provide C, E, and X? All you have to do is say the “answer” is 1998 over the given A, , because you can provide c and e using (b+c = 9999) and (d+e = 9999).
Am I missing something?
If so, I am confused.
If not, I am unimpressed but yet still somewhat amused.

I learned a cool math trick too.
OK, take any number. Any number you want.
Now, add three to that number.
OK, now multiply by 2.
OK, now subtract 6.
Now divide by 2
Now subtract your original number.

I don’t know why I bothered. It would have been better if it would have been done all at once… I get the answer from the first number, and then the whole trick can be done within about a minute… I thought it was pretty cool when I first learned it, but it really doesn’t go over well on a message board, especially not when I forget about it and am too busy to come back to it anyways. The problem is, the trick NEEDS another person’s input - its not like its too impressive to just add numbers that I provide.
So, person gives a number: ABCD
I can then determine the answer to the whole trick from that single number.
Person gives another number, EFGH and I “respond” ( suppose thats the best way to describe it) by providing another number, IJKL. Then we do the same thing again, to get two more four-digit numbers.
We end up with a total of 5 numbers, which we add, and they add up to the number that I determined from looking at only one number.
I thought without the ability to edit posts, and a little bit of patience on the part of dopers, this could work, but I suppose its more impressive in person. It’s really a simple trick to solve, but its kind of cool to see anyways (at least IMHO).

I also usually don’t reveal the answer right away, but make sure the person knows where/when I wrote it down. That would REALLY not have worked here, since it would look like I just added it up at the end, so I tried to change the approach.
Like I said, the WHOLE thing takes about a minute, so I’m not sitting there for hours deciding which numbers to “respond” with in order to make it work.
I guess I was hoping for more response on the original day - late-night back and forth, and I didn’t get it. So this dragged on, and it flopped horribly.
