A Google Map Link, Possible Forest Fire

Found this image while researching a lake I might head over to this weekend.

Initially I had no idea what it was but finally ended up calling it the start of a forest fire. The lack of smoke and the weird shape of the fire make me doubt my conclusion though.

Maybe it’s a gold farm. :o

I would have just guessed it’s a cornfield.

I don’t think it’s fire. No smoke, as you say, and you can see tractor tyre marks on the ground. I think it’s either crops (rapeseed?) or bare soil which for some reason is showing up as a funky colour due to imaging problems.

Edit - for comparison, rapeseed fields in England. The imagery in the OP’s post is lower resolution (satellite rather than aerial photography, I think) which could account for the weird coloration.

There was a controlled burnin the area back in 2005. Is it possible that the satellite image is that old?

My boss is a trained photo interpreter. From him, it’s not a fire. The yellow/orange area are plants of some sort.

If it helps my two year-old has just said “daddy, that’s a picture of a fire” when she saw the map link.

Hereis the exact same area from Bing maps.

Your area looks normal but if you move north about a thousand feet there is an area that is also a funky yellow color. Is it some kind of crop?

Well then there’s our answer. Can we get a mod to lock this thread? :stuck_out_tongue:

PS: maybe you should change your link because it has an address (I’m assuming yours) as the starting point in the directions. Not that any of us would do anything bad with it, I’m just sayin.

Yeah, it looks like some sort of crop to me. I can see that area clearly on the Google Map too.
Can we get an approximate time of year by looking at the scenery and the crops?

Done.

I’ve seen a few grass fires and every one is a large, black, charred area with a thin line of active flame.

Looks like crop differentials, maybe some Acapulco gold next to some Panama Red.

Using the history function in Google earth we can get an exact date for that photo: May 11, 2002.

I was going to go with mustard blooming in a vineyard, but May would be a bit late for that. It’s certainly something blooming.

This has been answered but I went to look at my house on Google Maps, which used to be a pre-2005 picture … and found that the picture was updated sometime this June!

I can tell because I got my deck added in May, got furniture for the deck at the end of May, and decided to move my dog’s bowl from the patio to the deck in June. Furniture’s there but the dog’s bowl is still on the patio. Lucky for me, my dog has a humongous outdoor bowl, visible from the sky!

My yard sure looks sharp, tho. Woohoo!

I sent an email to the park and got a short response from the supervising ranger.
