A heartfelt request from a recent convert to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"

Early last week, before the recent board crash that ate a few thousand messages, I posted a request here for my fellow Dopers to help me and my wife continue our frantic dash to catch up with the last few seasons of “Buffy” before the new season is too far gone. I went on at length about how we’ve fallen in love with the show, that we’re kicking ourselves for having resisted its call until a few months ago, and that, now that we’ve managed to cram ourselves full of “Buffy” all the way through season four with the help of generous tape-lending friends, we cannot stop, and must continue.

I never saw any of the responses to that thread; the board crashed before I could come back to it. However, I’m overjoyed to report that Stoid took it upon herself to email me directly, and we’re currently working out a tape-borrowing arrangement. To her, my wife and I say thank you, thank you, thank you.

Apparently, there was also some other discussion in that thread before it evaporated, though I can’t say for sure because I never saw it. I’m hoping that whatever was said – something about Stoid and/or others getting a hold of a missing episode here and there? – can be addressed again.

But that brings me to my new request. It’s kind of a no-brainer, but here it is: Please spare me from spoilers! I see the thread in this forum about the season seven premiere, and although I itch with the desire to find out what’s going on in the Buffyverse, I resist the call. Part of the genius of Joss Whedon is the unbelievably elaborate story arcs that cheerfully turn the whole world upside down for weeks at a time (or permanently), and it’s why I don’t want to know what happens later until I find out what happens next. I already know some stuff, just because it’s hard to avoid (who is Glory, exactly? don’t tell me!), and it’s bad enough that we get the “next week on an all-new Buffy!” commercials during “Enterprise.” So please, don’t make it worse.

But if you want to talk about stuff that’s happened up through season four in this thread, hey, be my guest. Oh, wait, just in case anybody is skimming:

THIS MAY CONTAIN BUFFY SPOILERS THROUGH SEASON FOUR! TURN BACK NOW OR FOREVER BE SCARRED OR SOMETHING.

Okay, that takes care of that. Hell, as long as I said it, I might as well live up to it.

Let’s see, random stuff for discussion:

Best season so far – season two by a whisker, followed by season three. Season four had some high points but suffered from inconsistency and missed potential. Season one was a shakeout cruise.

Best episode so far – “Hush” is the obvious choice, but I have a major soft spot for “The Zeppo,” “Something Blue,” “Halloween,” “Doppelgangland,” and, especially, “The Wish.” Oh, and the season-four ender, “Restless,” contains quite possibly the best dream writing I’ve ever seen in any medium. Plus an honorable mention to one episode solely for its title, “The Yoko Factor.”

Worst episode so far – a tie between “Where the Wild Things Are” (in which Buffy and Riley’s lovemaking brings about badness) and “Killed by Death” (the one with the kids in the hospital).

Best obscure cultural reference – Xander offhandedly refers to Amy Yip in a second-season episode (don’t remember which). I literally fell off the couch, paused the DVD, and ran into the other room to get one of my Hong Kong Cinema reference books so I could explain it to my wife and show her a picture.

And P.S. – Yes, I’m watching “Firefly” until it either (1) loses its way or (2) gets cancelled.

(Big, big thanks again to Stoid.)

What? Killed By Death rocked! Maybe I think that just becase the MOTW scared the shit out of me.

Worst episode ever? As You Were in S6 stunk so badly on so many different levels that I refuse to watch it ever again. Really, I thought I would never say this about a BTVS episode, but it was horrible. (Of course, you haven’t seen this episode yet, so I won’t tell you why it sucked so bad.)

I haven’t seen “As You Were”, but I think “Gone” totally felched maggot-ridden goat corpses.

Best episode? “Something Blue”. God, I loved that episode…

Worst ep? Double Meat Palace or Bad Eggs, with Go Fish as a close third (although - Xander. In a speedo. Wet.

Best Ep? Prophecy Girl, Surpise and Innocence

StG

Gone was a fucking 4 star episode compared to As You Were.
I am not exagerating.

Cervaise: Good to here that you’ve gotten hooked to BTVS, and that you are getting the previous episodes. However, if you would like, I have every episode so far on my computer. Each episode is about 350 megs. I’m willing to upload them to you if you like, e-mail me at hirka@mindspring.com if your intreasted.

You are very welcome, Cervaise!

Now, to MY needs…hehehehe… I need to borrow 3 episodes from someone. Which 3? Why borrow? Why need? For my video project, of course! Oh, I hadn’t mentioned it already? "** The Spike Files ** " - Spike’s story, from beginning to present, all Spike, all the time, without any pesky non-spikitude to take up time and space.

I need them in tape format, I can’t work with stuff that has already been encoded, otherwise I’d bug Hirka. All I want to do is copy them to my computer.

I need:
** Once More With Feeling
Life Serial
All the Way **

So…anyone? Because Cervaise will also need these eps since I don’t have them. (I actually do have OMWF, but only in encoded form, which I’ve already explained I can’t work with. And I need the full version with the extra 8 minutes, I believe)

By the way, I don’t think y’all are 'sposed to be naming post- Season 4 eps as worst, since Cervaise hasn’t seen them!

My vote for worst in the first 4 seasons? ** Beer Bad. **

(6 * 22) + 12 + 1 = 145* .35 GB
50 gigs of Buffy. That’s really scary.

I know Stoid, but none of the eps in the first 4 seasons can even touch As You Were in terms of the sheer magnitude of suckyness.

I didn’t like Amends that much, but that’s only because I was rooting for Angel to “take the long walk into the sun”. I know, I’m horrible.

Ahhhh… a new Buffy fan. This brings back memories. I was in more or less the same position about a year ago. Fortunately for me, that was when FX started showing it in syndication, so I was able to catch up at warp speed. I do not recommend that for anyone else tho, as FX has now taken to showing heavily edited episodes…you’ll miss some really good stuff…

I am happy to restricty myself to those seasons. Still plenty to talk about in them.

I totally agree, especially about S4. Liked S5 as well.

Agree about “Hush”. It was part of what made S4 so wildly uneven. “Dopplegangland” rocked. I think “The Zeppo” didn’t live up to it’s potential…an awesome idea, I loved the subtle self-parody, but the Xander storyline was weak and contrived. “Restless” was fantastic…I myself tend to fixate on that one scene in the ice cream van  but the rest of the ep was really good too. I didn’t particularly care for “The Yoko Factor”, but if you want a cool title, how about the original title of “Invisible Girl”…“Out of Mind, Out of Sight”.

I thought WtWTA was ok…had an awesome line from Giles. KbD I don’t remember hardly, which I guess isn’t a good sign. The show has had it’s share of clunkers, but the ones that really make me cringe are “Dead Man’s Party” and “Beer Bad”, and a few from later seasons. Plus, “The I in Team” and “Goodbye Iowa” make up the crappy core of S4, IMHO.

I bet season 4 would have been really, really great if Riley wasn’t so lame. (Yeah, I feel comfortable shifting all the blame of every bad episode to the big, gaping maw of boredom that was Riley Finn.)

Cite?

I don’t doubt its true,i just want to know what i’ve been missing.

Mostly throw away lines that aren’t throw away lines at all. Like in Becoming part 2.
Spike: Dru bagged a slayer! Good for her! * THough, not from your perspective I suppose. *
The italicized part was taken out.

Things like that. Or in Graduation Day part 2 when Giles and Xander confront Angel in the hospital about him nearly draining Buffy.
Giles curtly: “You better go, Angel. We’ll watch over her.”
Angel shakes is head: “I don’t want to…”
*Giles interrupts in a hard voice: “The sun will be up soon.” *
Angel hesitates, clearly reluctant to leave, glances up at Giles. Swallows hard and nods looking down, half looks towards Buffy’s room, then slowly walks away.
They removed Giles’ line, and I think, changed the whole meaning of the exchange. But that could just be me…

Occasionally, it ruins the entire joke! Like this exchange from the Zeppo.
Buffy: Uh, what do we do with the trio here? Should we burn them?

Willow: (smiles) I brought marshmallows.

Everyone gives her a surprised look. Giles puts his glasses back on.

Willow: (with dignity) Occasionally, I’m callous and strange.

effac3d: I saw it with my own eyes…or rather, I didn’t see it. The first time I saw “Dopplegangland” on FX, it had the little exchange between Buffy and Angel that ended with Angel saying “Well, actually…good point.” The second time, it was gone. And that was a cool bit. Not absolutely necessary to the plot, but adds richness.

PLG: You hate Riley. You hate Angel. And you absolutely adore Buffy’s only other (potential) love interest, Spike. Methinks I detect a pattern here :p.

FTR, I liked Riley, but this doesn’t cause me to hate Spike.

Weird_Al, the funny thing is that I hated Angel and Riley before I liked Spike. I didn’t even care about Spike when I saw Amends and was cheering on the First Evil, and really, Riley was nothing but a big ol’ Mary Sue.

Yup…on the first FX run-through, the episodes were shown uncut. Then, around the time of the marathon, FX switched over to the cut syndicated version episodes. What a shame…a full 2-3 minutes are taken out of each episode, ruining the pacing & removing quite a few classic lines. I really hope that they’ll wise up, and give us another run of the uncut episodes. They could promote the hell out of them as being uncut, and get some additional viewers that way.

Weird_Al_Einstein, I hate Riley, don’t hate Angel, but don’t really like him. Angel didn’t become a particularly interesting character until the third season, when they were gearing him up for his own show. The first two seasons, I thought he was a plot device. I do, however, adore Spike. So, pepperlandgirl is not alone in the Spike and Only Spike column.

BTW, after seeing the season opener, I think it very likely that I may lose our little bet. Not ready to concede yet, but you may want to e-mail me your address, so I’ll know where to send the $20.

Aarrgh! My eyes! –scrub scrub scrub–

Oh, and re the goofiness that is Riley, have you seen the “shrine to the big lug” on the BBC website? For each episode, they collect some of the priceless behaviors of “the dumbest guy on TV.”

Start here.

If I had the download bandwidth and storage capacity on my home machine that I do here at work, I’d take you up on it. Sadly, the PC I use at home is a couple of years out of date and has only dialup connectivity. Methinks it would start to spew smoke before getting past the credits of the first episode. Thanks, though.

I think I mentioned this in email, but my brain has been rather porous lately. Anyway: My hardcore Buffyphile friend has “Once More With Feeling” on VHS, taped from the original UPN airing, so it’s the complete extend-o version, not the cut-by-ten-minutes version shown in repeats and syndication. We’d be more than happy to run you a dub of that to send along when we return the tapes we’re borrowing; his copy is original to him, not a dub of a dub, so any dupe made from it should be very clean.

In addition, this same friend may be getting a complete season 6, which would include “Life Serial” and “All the Way,” from a different source. He’ll know within the next day or two whether this is coming through. Again, we’ll be happy to copy these over for you. They’ll likely be copies of copies, though, so they probably won’t be as clean as “Once More With Feeling.”

As of now, then, we just need season 5. Let me know cost of shipping via email, and I’ll do a paypal right away.

Thanks again!
