A natural hat trick is three goals scored by a player in one period, rather than being spaced out over the course of a game.

I thought it was 3 consecutive goals, not necessarily in the same period. I could be wrong but that’s what I thought.

I don’t know Montfort, I always thought it was three goals scored in a row. That is, the same player scores three consecutive goals with no player from either team scoring in between.

Of course, I could be wrong.

Apparently, I am corrected: it’s when a player scores three consecutive goals, not necessarily in one period.

Hat Trick
An ordinary hat trick is where the same player scores three goals in a game but another player or players from the same side scores in between. A natural hat trick is where three goals are scored consecutively by the same player in the same game. The term is generally accepted to derive from the habit of a Toronto haberdasher of presenting a new hat to any three-goal scorer in Maple Leaf Gardens. Today’s custom is for fans to throw hats onto the ice to celebrate the achievement.
