A Hurricane Resistant House?

Seems like people just build regular old houses in Florida, and other hurricane prone areas. I have to think that there are designs that are more hurricane resistant than these standard houses. Anyone have any ideas or info? I can imagine some sort of low slung house with gradual angles, symmetric sides, and arches that should be more suited to withstanding the stong winds common in these places. And, it’s unlcear that these designs need to be any more expensive than what people seem to build.

A good place to start and the only type of home I would build from scratch is here.

Sorry, me again with one more link about concrete homes.

Here’s what the Teeming Millions (OK, the Teeming Several) gave me.

This article has a picture of a house built specifically for surviving hurricanes. I saw the owner on the news, saying he was going to ride out Ivan. It sounds like he came through okay. Looks sort of like a helmet.
