Just wanting to know whether the weird alien-like creatures that thaw out david’s submercible near the end of the movie were aliens who had discovered and colonised, or, robots that were created by the humans before they died out.

They were robots. Royal Sampler, please take advantage of the SDMB’s search function. There were many, many threads about this when the movie came out back in early summer.
I think Cafe Society is a better place for this thread, so I’ll be moving it shortly.

Just type “A.I.” in the search funcion at the top and allow it to look back a few months and you will find tons of responses.
They were mechas. Spielberg and Kennedy(the producer) said this wasn’t even supposed to be up for debate. I posted a the site where I got that from in one of the other threads.
