My kids appreciate Gorey–they have little choice since the Tinies poster graces the wall of my bathroom. I remember my nine year old coming out of the bathroom after I had hung it up saying, “you’re pretty twisted, mom!” but smiling all the while. My fav is "N is for Neville who died of ennui.
N is for Nelville, who died of ennui.
My favorite.
I also have the poster. Got it in 1984 or '85 at the ‘New York is Book Country’ fair on 5 Avenue . GP Putnam had a booth with just Gorey stuff. I noticed this gray-haired man in sunglasses and a thick beard behind the booth. Mr. Gorey was a rather shy man, but he very politely autographed the lower right corner of my poster. With a fountian pen, if I recall.
psssst read the OP carefully
That will teach those Letter People!
One of my favourite books! I have a couple of Gorey’s books. My favourite from The Gashlycrumb Tinies is “N is for Neville who died of ennui.” (It kinda goes along with my utter boredome and sense of isolation in L.A.)
Neville’s death of ennui was a catch phrase for my friends and I all through college. Yes, I did hang out with the freaks, why do you ask?
I loved Edward Gorey when I was a kid. I used to write tragedies about all the people I knew based on The Listing Attic. Some of them actually weren’t freaked out when I showed them.
I’m kind of fond of ‘The Unstrung Harp,’ myself, but my favorite is… argh, I can’t remember its name, the ‘pornographic’ story in which all the sex is described and illustrated with great discretion.
Here, I found it, it’s ‘The Curious Sofa.’
“Colonel Gilbert and his wife, Louise, came in after dinner; both of them had wooden legs, with which they could do all sorts of entertaining tricks.”
And I too am a devotee of Neville who died of ennui. It’s the picture.
Big Gorey fan, here. In fact, I’m bidding on a book on eBay right now. Favorites: “The Beastly Baby” and the one about Sara, the wicked little girl who is eaten by an enormous cat (“it was jolly well done!”).
I plan on reading them to the little one soon, as soon as he can understand a little more. Right now, he just wants to tear books up and eat them.
Can’t pin down a favorite “Gashlycrumb”, but Ogdred Weary is my favorite phoney name.
The happier you are, the more potential for misery you have.
