A little curious about a music download site

A friend and my daughter both received texts about a website where one can download music just .08 a song for the month of February. I visited the site and sure enough it's true. Normally the songs cost .38 each. The site is www . wermp3 . com. It seems too good to be true. This is what makes me nervous. I’m not so much worried about spam or viruses as I am worried about this being a phishing site.

I was wondering if anybody knew anything about this site or knows how to check out its legitimacy. If it is legitimate then i plan on taking advantage of it. If it isn’t I need to let my friend know.

I use a bittorent (DNA, Comet, etc.) and I go to sites like Pirate Bay, Mininova, Torrent Portal, etc. I also installed a firefox adon called WOT which will throw up a black screen that says something to the effect of…Warning, Will Robinson, warning, warning. When that happens I get the hell out.

Also, I guess you can go to blog sites and get music that the person has put out there for anybody.

Both of those methods are free, but still being disputed as to whether it should be allowed to continue or not…your choice.

This whole site looks fishy. From its ridiculously bad grammar (meaning it’s foreign), to its incredibly vague and incomplete legal info. I certainly wouldn’t give this place my credit card info. I was going to say that if you’re going to go with a quasi-legal cheap mp3 site, allofmp3.com was always a good alternative, but they now appear to be out of business too.

If you’re ever curious about any pay site just get a pre-paid debit card from one of those check cashing places. They’re a bit spendy to open, but once they’re established you can never be beat for more than you want to be. Put $10 on it and spend as much as you can. The worst that can happen is that you need to buy a new gimme card.

The info on the domain:

Free email address from Russia.
“123 Wall Street”
Zip code 1000
Country code is for for Ukraine instead of US, as the address tries to lead you to believe.
Registered on January 19, 2009.
The website is using an IP address from the Netherlands.
Advertising via text message spam.

Make your own decision, but this isn’t a site I’d give any information to.

Most of these sites are (ultimately) of Russian or similar origin and will in most cases deliver the music they promise. The problems are -

1: It’s illegal. They have no license or agreement with the content providers to to do this. They have a massive collection of music files and are simply selling them online.

2: I have not heard of them scamming credit cards (they want you to keep buying) but anyone who gives them an open ended credit card # *(vs a fixed acct Visa) is a fool.

They are simply selling MP3s and they are betting that by the time the authorities pay attention they will have made enough to justify the operation and move on.

Thanks for the feedback. It has certainly confirmed by suspicions. I just needed a little objective, informed feedback. I’ll let my buddy know to avoid it.
