This was on the front page of my newspaper this morning. Lately the board has been so full of the evil that mankind is capable of that I thought I’d share this opposite example.
Basically, the story is this: a middle-aged white couple from Virginia are caregivers for a disabled Black man. He was not disabled by any fault of theirs and they didn’t know him before his accident. When they took him into their home he had been living in a nursing home for 8 years – since he was 20. They met him at the nursing home, started visiting him and eventually brought him home to live with them. He has lived with them since 1992. In the article, Mrs. Methany says that they “do no more for him than we would do for one of our own kids.” Well, it is no small thing to do for a complete stranger what you would do for your own.
The Methanys give the glory of their actions to God, and that is fine – certainly they are among the finest examples of “true Christians” I’ve ever seen. However, I take it a bit further – they are fine examples of what it means to be human. A newspaper, by its very nature, is usually full of the Sad, the Bad and the Evil. It was so nice to see this perfect example of the Good – and on the front page too! Today, at least, I am proud of my species.
