On another messageboard that I frequent, some people were saying that they had never played Team Fortress 2 (me neither). We all were going to hop out and get it (I got it for 17 bucks, used).
A perk of getting the Orange Box is having Half Life 2, which I’ve never touched, let alone played. So far, it’s okay. The mudskipper portion is a pain in the ass because it can be hard at times to tell where you’re going/have already gone/where you need to go. Some of the “puzzles” are pretty unintuitive, which has already sent me to a walkthrough.
I’ve tinkered with Portal and Team Fortress. Portal is nice, Team Fortress is going to take some serious getting used to.
TF2 is a little different flavor than L4D, but it’s still a lot of fun. I played Team Fortress Classic for nine years and bought TF2 about a year ago. The controls and the game play take some getting used to, especially when you’re switching from L4D. I used to dominate the games until I switched to L4D, returning back to TF2 is a whole different story…now I’m the team’s Helen Keller.
It’s a lot nicer than L4D in that you can still win even if you have a few incompetent players on the team. However, it does take some time getting used to the larger amount of players and dying a lot. You’ll eventually find a couple of classes that you’ll enjoy playing. They all have pros and cons so I would recommend experimenting with them all a little and practice on a random server. It’s part strategy (engineers setting up sentry guns, spies backstabbing) and part chugging out bullets and hope something hits the enemy (heavy weapons, pyro).
To be honest, when I first tried TF2 I HATED it with a passion (it’s very different to my once-beloved TFC) but it eventually grew on me. What had me rage quitting in five minutes would eventually have me coming back for more, and a little more, and just five more minutes mom I swear…
Team Fortress 2 also has a different pacing than Left 4 Dead, Halo 3, or Call of Duty 4 or 5. Hell, it’s even different from Portal.
I’ll tinker with it, and I’ve got some folks to play with, but I don’t see this in any way, shape, or form taking over Halo as the game I play the most.
I love Portal and it made the entire buy worthwhile. It was pretty cheap. Probably 19 bucks from Amazon. I loved the entire idea of gameplay for portal since the day I heard about it. I played a flash version that was super fun. So, I was thrilled when I got a hold of the real thing.
Half Life 2, I thought was ok. At the start of the game I thought it was neat and had some good personality. But, then I got on the boat and it just kept going without much variety.
I still haven’t tried Team Fortress. But, I am not huge on multiplayer games that are just multiplayer. (I do love the multiplayer aspects of other games like LBP, or GTA4.)
Yeah, I tend to have somewhat of a competitive streak thanks to Valve games (started on TFC then moved to CS and DoD). I’ve never played Halo, all the boys constantly babbling about it in school pretty much killed any potential interest.
If you’re ever interested in playing a game of L4D or TF2 sometime, feel free to message me. My current name is [RE]CheWy_HamSteR.
I just got to this party as well. I finally upgraded from my 1.3GHz AMD machine to a 3.0 GHz dual core Intel. I have a long list of games that I’ve wanted to play - but couldn’t due to my obsolete machine. I just picked up the Orange Box a couple of weeks ago. Absolutely LOVED Portal.
The cake is a lie
I’m playing through HL2 - and while it was really cool at the beginning, it seems like it’s just going on too long with the same stuff. I’m currently at the jail level (Nova Prospect - I think), and I’m just not as excited about playing any further.
I really wondering if Ep. 1 and Ep. 2 are worth playing as well.
I am going to start playing TF2 - I played the classic version way back when HL was new and had fun with that and DoD. I tried DoD for HL2 and quickly got my ass handed to me. Either I’m rusty or there’s cheaters out there!
If anyone on here is interested - my nickname on steam is bulletkatcha
Half Life 2 doesn’t really take off until you get the gravity gun. That thing is hellafun. And doing the “One Free Bullet” in Ep 1 is very challenging at times.
I want to play Team Fortress 2 and get some achievements, but I’m intimidated by the fact that I have to jump into online play; there’s no way to do it single player and at least gain some familiarity with the weapons and controls before being thrust into a match. I’m leaving my Xbox off for a while to keep my wife from killing me, but maybe in a week or so? Will y’all be kind and give me a chance to learn, not just destroy me?
Dude, online play is where it’s at. I’m at the same point as you with regards to Team Fortress, though. On 2o2p, there’s a Gamertag we created for the Team Fortress newbies, so we can all suck and play together (we usually do on Sunday night).
Oh, I love online play. I just don’t want to look like an idiot and hurt my team, and to do that I feel like I should be at least passingly familiar with the game before jumping into a match. The fact that there was no way to even try it out before going online was intimidating.
Anyway, I sent a friend request to the 2o2p tag. Also, I bought and installed a new router and tweaked some settings in the hopes of eliminating that connection problem you and I were having earlier (I couldn’t even party chat with one friend who lives in the same town as me). I still need to test it, though, so I’ll look for you next time I’m online.
