A love for cookbooks: An Epicurean MMP

Feast Of France, by Antoine Gilly, is well worth having if you can get it. The author’s love for the craft, and for the culinary traditions of his native France, is evident in every paragraph. I’m not a picky eater, but like most people these days shy away organ meats; Gilly devotes a whole chapter to these, mentioning the high esteem in which they are held by French diners. His descriptions and recipes make me actually wish to sample such fare if I ever have the opportunity. I mean, who am I to say that lamb’s brains paired with just the right wine might not actually be an enjoyable–even memorable–meal?

Be forewarned, though, most of the recipes in the book are fairly difficult, often calling for sub-recipes elsewhere in the book in the same way a large computer program calls submodules along the way. Also, traditional French cuisine is not known for being low in calories or fat.

In the P.G. Wodehouse novel Pigs Have Wings the obese Sir Gregory Parsloe-Parsloe, Bart, is pressured into dieting by his fiance, and therefore spends his evenings sadly reading cookbooks as a reminder of the more untrammeled lifestyle of his past.

My leak is nothing. It’s Pie’s leak that could level a building.

But, my leak did devolve into Plan C (or was it D?) which was to just cut the hose at the split, and splice the ends together as the universal hose wouldn’t fit the sprayer. Now, it’s back to pretty much normal - we just can’t pull the thing out as far as before.

Now for the bigger task - we need wedding music!

There’s no bride, so the traditional Wagner “Here comes the bride” is right out. Pachelbel’s Canon is so overused it’s cliche and is summarily tossed out as well.

I’m having thoughts of the B-52’s Follow Your Bliss or Rusted Root’s Send Me On My Way for the recessional, and Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now from Jefferson Airplane/Starship is another possibility, but the processional is being trickier. Some possibilities are Tangerine Dream’s Ghazal, Anthem Part 1 from Philip Glass’ Powaqqatsi and G Major Toccata from Mannheim Steamroller.

I was thinking of the variation on Bolero from the end credits of Moulin Rouge, but it’s one long accelerando. It starts out stately, but by the end, we’d be in a trot. Tattoo from* Tubular Bells II* is looking like a strong contender, though.

{YAWN!} Off to bed, and back up in 6 hours as bank infrastructure doesn’t get the day off.

Hey, you’re younger than I am!
Now get off my lawn! Hey, I don’t even have a lawn…

Yes, thank fate or luck or whatever for that! Hope the pain goes away soon, too.

Seconding Gotti’s suggestion to try and pinpoint the leak using the “old soapy water (:stuck_out_tongue: – so there!)” method.
And boo about the laptop, too. I think you should really go all medieval on their ass, to the point where they’ll be happy all you want from them is a new laptop!

I though I saw **Haze **poke her head into the thread? :waves:

Nava, are we still on for that tete-a-tete with some nice white wine? (is, too, on topic – wine is food related! ;))

So is Lunch. Does that make you the topic of discussion?

What’s for Lunch?

Oh, eat me…! :stuck_out_tongue:

(Your real name doesn’t happen to be Alice, by any chance…? :dubious:)

Why, do you not want to get eaten by a woman named Alice?

Up early, even on a holiday. I have to go play at the horsepistol; 6 hours with the respiatory folks, then 6 hours in Labor and Delivery. I’m either brave, or a pervert…

TTFN

I am not a mushroom!

Also, I completely forgot! :smack: :o – HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GardenTraveler!!!

Even if it is, I think, a day late.

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffienatin’. That’s about as excitin’ as it gets right now too. I’s sleepy still. Which means I need more caffiene and some brekkies.

Happy Veterans/Rememberance Day dependin’ on where ya are.

Happy Belated GT Day!!

I had a recipe success this morning - I found my swedish meatball instructions. It came off a bag of meatballs and I’d forgotten that I wrote it down before tossing the bag. So yay!

I’ve been compiling my Thanksgiving and party-after-Thansgiving shopping list. I should be able to get all but the fresh veggies by this weekend. Then I need to figure out what gets cooked when. I wonder if the turkey will fit in the rotisserie - that’d be perfect!

And I’m up early on the holiday because my sweetie didn’t get the day off. He’s got a big design review today and he woke earlier than usual. Once I finish my comics/Dear Abby/LOLCATS routine, I’m going to continue sorting the stuff in the little guest room and put some of it away in the larger guest room. Just 2 weeks and the inlaws will be here, so I need to have a tidy place for them.

I had a dream last night that Harrison Ford was the President-elect. He and I were walking thru the White House, and it was truly a WHITE house - all the walls inside were white and blank - nothing hanging on them. Plus the paint job was obviously rushed and sloppy. Then the scene shifted and I was following my daughter to the school where she teaches. Very bizarre.

Anyway, good morning all and Happy Veterans Day to all youse vets out there!

Happy Birthday GT!

Sorry’s It’s Belated! I meant to say Happy Birthday in my OP, but I’m an idiot.

But we knew that already!

Off to work. I need to put a pot roast in the Crock Pot, shower and all while my family sleeps. They have the day off. I do not. :frowning:

Try waiting a couple months, it’s amazing how much the price of calendar goes down on January 1st!

Is someone having a birthday? I thought I heard birthdayish noises…
Happy Birthday, GT!

Why those colors? Well, why not?

Back to trying to look busy. I should be writing my NaNoWriMo abortion but I’m kind of stuck. Would trowing in a bunch of unlinked scenes count as cheating?
Sorry, Lunch, did you say anything? I was busy looking for a pair of glasses… or are those optional?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GT!

Whichever day it was/is!

Now let’s see if the caps lock stays this time!

Gotti and Noonie… I’m not exactly sure 100% what was going on, but I know that the heating guy was doing that **young, new, and fresh Soapy **test. It seems, though, he wasn’t comfortable tracing it any further than just to the back of my appliances. I don’t understand but I guess part of the problem is that my stove has about 7 constantly lit pilots. If he tried to check that one it wouldn’t work. So I guess he just decided not to check the other… I guess.

Nava, good idea on the calendar, but they are supposedly only taking orders until December 3rd and only going to make just that many.

Well, I enjoyed sleeping in, but I’d rather have lots of work instead of just feeding 13 people.

Well, then, you should make them, the sluggards, cook for you, the hard-worked career-person!

Completely optional. We’re not about to be “oh so veddy polite,” now are we…?

ETA:

But was the test also pure? 99.44% pure, at least!?
Also, was the heating guy “young, new, and fresh”?

Happy belated Birthday, GardenTraveler!!!

I hope everybody’s leakiness gets fixed, pronto!

I’m starting to plan my Thanksgiving menu. I’m gonna make this Mexican layered dip I saw on Food Network for one of the appetizers. I’ll get my FREE turkey this weekend. Apparently Kroger likes me a lot. They sent me a bunch of coupons, including four $15 off if I spend $100, plus a free turkey and a lot of other stuff. People talk about those customer loyalty cards as being bad, but I love mine. They send me good coupons for stuff I regularly buy.

It seems that all I do is think about food.

Laterz…

I feel rather incidental to this conversation…

Happy birthday, gt.

Must make another brief appearance- Other Quasi-Daughter had a little tiny girl baby yesterday at nine p.m. Little and tiny. Eight pounds. We’re planning to go see them on Saturday, and no, I don’t have pics yet.

¡¡¡CHIQUIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!! (That’s Spanish for “squee over itty bitty little one”)

Yum. All the talk of food is making me hungry.

Thanks for all the birthday wishes, by the way. And no, Soapy, you are *not *an idiot.

I’m up and have had my Cheerios and put the recycling out. It was pretty cold last night, so I’m thinking I might work inside for a while, then make my way outside for a couple of hours.

Yay for found money, Pie!

LiLi, congrats to OQD. Baby!!! Wheeeee!!!

Hope things go well at the horsepistol, Bobbio.

Guess I should get moving here…

Back later.
