Testosterone certainly causes some problems in some contexts. But in other contexts, it helps. And I’m not sure how meaningful it is to claim that males are a variant on a basic female template: It’s like asking whether zebras are white with black stripes or black with white stripes.

Well, technically, it is true that from a developmental standpoint, female is the default. If an XY person has androgen insensitivity, the person will be born looking female. Also, the few weeks that are spent diverging to develop as male mean that newborn boys are more vulnerable than newborn girls. I learned that as a candystriper in maternity, and it was confirmed by my OB when I was pregnant.

It’s the reason, that, according to my OB, there are 105 boys conceived for every 100 girls, but only 97 boys born for every 100 girls, and more boys die in their first 5 years.

But I have no opinion about loaded words like “damaged.”

Well, my first impression was that the author only grudgingly sees men as human.

Even when we try to reduce the male-female difference as a society, men who do not willingly participate in that often end up being fairly nasty, dangerous beasts; they may be rapists, they may be batterers, they may be some other thing.
