A most un-Rock-n-Roll retirement

I heard Sugar Ray on the radio today and realized that lead singer Mark McGrath is now a game show host. Very un-Rock-n-Roll.

Ice Cube-- the n*gga with attitude who was straight outta Compton with his chrome to the side of your White Sox cap-- now stars in and produces family-friendly movies and TV shows. Very un-gangsta.

Alice Cooper can now be found more often on a golf course than on a stage scaring the snot out of America’s parents. Very un-Rock-n-Roll.

What other rock stars (hip-hop stars welcome too) have moved away from the sex, drugs and loud music and more toward the mainstream, and even nerddom?

Ian Anderson is raising salmon!

Myron Grombacher, long time drummer for Pat Benatar, now is the sales manager for a car dealership in Glendale, Ca.

Alice Cooper was always a nerd. The only difference now is that he’s old enough not to give a shit.

Come to think of it, the same thing applies to Mark McGrath. The man made a career out of catchy, disposable pop ditties, hosting a game show is right up his alley.

I always thought that Rodney Slater, a member of the Bonzo Dog Band, one of the wildest rock groups ever, become a social worker when the group broke up.

Frank Zappa is pushing daisies.

For at least 15 years now, I think.

.

Bill Berry retired from R.E.M. and is now farming.

Chuck Leavell (Allman Brothers, Rolling Stones) got involved with forestry and conservation.

David Palmer of Jethro Tull got a sex change operation and is now Dee Palmer. Ian Anderson was supportive although he did admit it was a shock, working with him as a pipe smoking, bearded man.

But golfing seems less nerdy and more establishment type thing.

Though I agree, not surprised about Mark McGrath. He wasn’t really a hardcore rock star to begin with.

Grace Slick is a painter and promotes veganism. Also, ironically for someone most famous for singing a song extolling the wonders of LSD, she is a admitted longtime member of A.A. Granted, she did have one very dramatic relapse in the early 90s, but the wild party hippie girl of the 60s is now a grandma.

Once upon a time, Sugar Ray had a significantly harder sound. This was on the Escape from L.A. soundtrack.

Krist Novoselic is a politician, though from what I hear from him from time to time, he seems to be a bit of an oddball when it comes to politicians, maybe he doesn’t count. Also, I’m not sure if he’s really retired from music. Is he still playing?

Ice-T, the gangster musician, now plays a cop!

Norman Rodgers, aka legendary Public Enemy DJ Terminator X, raises ostriches on a farm in Vance County, NC. (Or he did until a few years ago, anyway.)

The fact that he wrote a very controversial song titled “Cop Killer” makes it really mind boggling. Also he has a reality show that is extremely un-gangster. I’ve only seen clips of it on The Soup but that’s enough of it for me to see it is total crap.

On SVU I do love the interaction between Fin and Munch. They should have their own show.

Just what the world needs: ANOTHER Law & Order show.

Some Mark McGrath respect - when he was on Rock & Roll Jeopardy (hosted by Jeff Probst, no less), he showed himself to be the ultimate student of rock and roll music - the dude knew EVERYTHING.

Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden (yes, THAT Bruce Dickinson) flies airliners.

Roger Daltrey: trout farmer.
