Hey everyone,
I am attempting to answer this question in order to win a contest on my local radio station. It’s a ridiculous trivia question that I really have no idea how to find the answer to it. Many people have opinions on the answer, but no one has given me a 100% for sure answer yet. Here’s the question:
On average, North Americans do this 5 times a month.
Any ideas?

Just a WAG but “Go to church”?
If you account for a large catholic population in Mexico that only goes to Sunday and holiday masses, and a large protestant and catholic population in US and Canada that only goes on Sundays too, you can see that if you account for holidays the average would lean towards “Just over 4”. The worst an atheist/agnostic/non-church-goer can do to your average is have 0 a month, yet some people go every day contributing ~ 30 a month. Those people cancel out 6 atheists around your average. Plus all the practitioners of other religions that go to their church a few times a month. Sounds believable.
Also, if church isn’t the correct answer, I’d theorize that the answer, this being a trivia game, would be something that most of the population does 4-6 times a month OR that it’s something 1/4th of the population does every weekday or 1/6th of the population every day (with others not at all). This way “Going to school” would also be a reasonable guess.
We also have to consider some random and silly answers such as “Brush their hair”(men most likely do not, on average, nor do short haired women) or “Fill their gas tank” (possible, but that’s just an answer you would know, rather than arrive at with critical thought).
Use North America as an indicator. If it wasn’t relevant they could’ve said US. Maybe it’s something that say only hispanics do on weekdays. I remember from somewhere that roughly 1/3rd of the population of North America was hispanic(could be wrong), so it sort of adds up, however I’d be short pressed to find something mostly done by almost exclusively Hispanics, except maybe “speak Spanish”.

Also I noted in my search that binge drinking is considered drinking at least 5 beers in a day 5 times a month.
That’s “eat out” as in “eat at a restaurant, not at home”, you sickos

Perhaps we have stumbled on another possible answer to the trivia question, then
Compete in radio contests.
I would go for filling the gas tank.

Given the population of North America and my personal alcohol consumption, I assure you that average is impossible.
So this also includes the citizens of Canada and Mexico?
There is no one “right’ answer. We can give you a few, but there are several things that the average American does 5X a month. If we knew the source of the question- that is type of radio station, we can give better guesses, maybe. But I’d try 'eat out”. per Zipperjj.
Well, it depends how you look at it. If you count, say, days 1-6 as one binge, and days 7-12 as another, and so forth, that works out to five times a month.

Because this is a radio contest, the “correct” answer is the one that matches what the radio station has in mind, and not necessarily some definitive 100% correct answer. Most likely the station will cite some study to justify their choice of the correct answer. Just think of all the possible answers and submit them all. Off the top of my head, I can think of:
